Picture viewer window closing

I have been given a pen drive with a quantity of JPG files within a quantity
of folders.
I transferred these to my own 'Pictures' folder.
When I try and view the files in just two of the folders (about 10% of the
total)the viewing software just closes. I have tried it with Irfanview and
with Microsoft Photo Editor and the response is identical for each viewer.
However if I try and view the files directly from the pen drive there is no
problem.
Any light you can cast on this would be appreciated, thank you.
