Hi,

I have a few problems with a system im putting together.

Asus P4C800 Deluxe motherboard.
Prescott 3.0
Gforce 4 TI 4200 8xAGP
Windows XP Pro.

If i enable Hyper Threading in the BIOS, the system hangs in the windows startup, or just after windows have loaded. It then reboots and throttle back to 1.5 Ghz, under which it runs fine with HT. Im however not entirely pleased by this ;-)
When i pay good money for 3.0 Ghz with Hyper Threading, thats what i want.
I have installed all the latest drivers, but still no luck.
I have also disconnected CD-RW, HD #2 and the floppy, to see if i had insufficient power (run antec 380 W PSU), this had no effect, so i take it my supply is amble.
Anyone out there with a good idea ?

Jan

P.S. It better be more than "a good idea" as i have tried most already :-)

How do you return things BACK ??

Contact Intel Tehcnical Support, tell them your problem and that you want an RMA#. They'll either say it's a mobo problem or give you the RMA# and instructions on how to send them back the CPU.

Abit IS7 @ 275 FSB, OCZ PC4200 RAM @ 550Mhz, P4 2.4 @ 3.3Ghz Vcore @ 1.625, Sapphire Radeon 9800P @ stock, for now.
Thermalright SLK-947U, P3 HS @ NB.

I was only joking ! I dont need to return the processor, there is nothing wrong with it. Its something in my setup which stops the HT.
I need to find out what !

Just seemed the right thing to reply to a guy, who came up with #2 to solve my problem. I will have the same problem with HT in Northwood.

When you enable hyperthreading with DC memory in XP-Pro you should see 2 CPU's running at 1.5ghz. 2 X 1.5 = 3ghz.
Probably nothing wrong at all.

Could be wrong, but those would stress the 12v rail, no ? You cpu would mostly stress the 5v rail as I think most motherboards VRM's are driven by the 5v. While it seems not all that likely an Antec 380W wouldnt be up to the job or booting a 3 GHz prescott, I still wouldnt rule out the possibility.

Also, you need BIOS release 1016+. If you havent gotten this one yet, install it first.

Dont know where you read that, but if you are running your system like that, you are down ½ speed.
HT should show up are TWO processors of the actual speed. In my case 3.0 Ghz.
Now and again im able to run it like that, but only for awhile, then it shuts down, go 50% and reboots.

Did you try updating your bios already ? Like I posted, you need at least 1016 to support the P4E.

If that doesnt cure it, you might still be looking at a PSU issue

Hi,

Yes i have the latest BIOS. I will try to get a bigger PSU and have a go with it. But 380 W really should be ok.

Overall wattage doesnt tell you a whole lot, but I agree it would be surprising an Antec 380W would be insufficient.
