Started cleaning the PF of a very grungy GTB Surf Champ. Using the ME
with 70% Isopropyl on the colored areas of the PF are no problem....I
think I have the feel of when "enough is enough". However, at the top
of the PF in the unpainted area of the PF, I went a little to far in
trying to get rid of the dirt and grung. I now have a small area that
I believe has little if no lacquer left. The area looks lighter than
the surrounding areas.
Can (should) I spot touch-up this area with a few thin coats of
lacquer? Can I ever get the "lightness" to go away and have it blend
in?
I'm new at screwing up stuff (had to start some time), so any tips
would be really appreciated.

Yes - usually as you apply the lacquer the "lightness" (if it is from
dry wood - as it sounds it may be) will be gone... whether it will
blend in well is another question but I believe it will indeed darken.

use varathane instead, waterborne type. Laquer will soften the existing
clear laquer and could cause lifting. It will darken back up with the
varathane but may or may not match exactly. I'd advise sanding or ME'ing
the whole bare wood area now and then clearing it all with the varathane.

Cliffy,
Thanks for the suggestions. MEing seems like it would be too
intensive. If I sanded, what is the procedure..grits, wet or dry, etc.
I've never done this before, so please excuse what may be obvious
questions.

If the worst you did is break though laquer in an unpainted area,
consider yourself exceptionally lucky. When I did that, I just put
some minwax polyurethane (the kind that yellows) onto a cloth and
worked it in. In the end, it looked real good and matched the original
aged laquer around it nicely.

Mask off painted areas with 2 inch tape and then dry sand with 100 grit
paper. I really like the Norton 3X paper, doesn't clog and lasts a
helluva long time. When you get it down to the wood use some 240 dry
just lightly to knock down any fuzz. Now pull the tape, pick up dust
with a shop vac and a tack cloth and spray on some varathane. Shouldn't
take more than 2 or 3 coats and follow the can directions! Good luck

I'm sorry......but......what is MEing? I've been trying to figure it
out, and its probably very obvious (I'll most likely say D'Oh after
hearing the answer) but I just can't get it.....
Lightning Notes
