Hey hey

Recently I heard somewhere that A64's integrated memory controller might not be compatible with DDR2. Any truth to that? I know that right now DDR2 is kinda pointless. However I am planing to upgrade to an A64 system this summer and I think DDR2 is the future. So My question is, if I was to buy an Athlon64 (or FX) 3400-3700+, will it jive with DDR2?

No, the current memory controllers only support DDR. DDR2 would require an upgrade; AMD can do this, but you won't be seeing any AMD processors with DDR2-support in 2004 and possibly not until 2H 2005. AMD said DDR2 would only make sense from DDR2-667 and above; it remains to be seen if they were right.

Nope!

There is no indication as to when AMD will adopt DDR2. I seriously doubt that it will happen anytime in 2004. What I would like to know though is why you "think DDR2 is the future"? Is it simply because it's called DDR2?

Hummm... DDR2 will not outperform DDR until 2005, at least. AMD choose to not support DDR2 right now, because they don't need HIGH LATENCY / SLOWER memory that cost much more. If AMD would have made their A64 DDR2-ready, they would probably have to lower their rating, because DDR2 is noticebly slower than DDR right now.

DDR2 is NOT the NEAR future.

I think DDR2 with its lower power consumption and higher frequencies will be the trend in the future, but not the near future..

Exactly! You said it yourself ... "not in the near future". So my poing is, you should not consider a platform not using DDR2 inferior to a platform which is indeed using DDR2, just because "DDR2" sounds better than "DDR". Simply wait until when you need to buy, check out all the benchmarks available at that time, if you like you can also ask for help in these forums, and make your decison. Everything else is just marketing tricks.
