Cannot load program in DVD drive but music plays without a problem

Hello,
My Thinkpad T42 DVD drive can play
avi files and CDs with no problem, but is suddenly unable to install programs from, making a repeated clicking sound, as though it's broken.........when in fact it isn't. What is causing this?
