I've just purchased an 8300 and want to upgrade the memory.

Dell's literature says the maximum memory is 2gb, Crucial says 4gb.

Help!

Inmac.co.uk says the 8300 takes 2Gb max. 4Gb doesn't sound right for a
desktop, a server maybe; but the 8300 isn't a server.

Hope this helps,

Karl.

4GB is correct. I suspect the reason that Dell's specs show differently is
that I've never known Dell to offer a 1GB DIMM in their configurations -
perhaps upfront costs/pricing.

They do now:
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?cs=04&oc=dim83p&m_11=WPXP&m_1=SPB348B&m_17=SB1024&c=us&l=en&s=bsd&kc=6W463
probably because of increased availability over time.

In case the link doesn't work:
4GB Dual Channel DDR SDRAM at 400MHz [add $2,200 or $59/month1]
2GB Dual Channel DDR SDRAM at 400MHz (4x512M) [add $300 or $8/month1]
1GB Dual Channel DDR SDRAM at 400MHz (2x512M)
512MB Dual Channel DDR SDRAM at 400MHz (2x256M) [subtract $90]
FREE UPGRADE 512MB Dual Channel 400MHz DDR SDRAM [subtract $150]
256MB Dual Channel DDR SDRAM at 400MHz (2x128M) [subtract $150]

I'd tend to believe Dell. It is their OEM board. Just because a Intel spec
sheet says an OEM board supports something doesn't mean Dell supports it. I
think your in one of those gray areas.

Maybe the board technically supports 4GB but it was never tested with 4GB of
memory?

If you go to Dell's website and customize an 8300, you will see that
memory selection goes up to 4GB. This is new system, I assume.

I purchased an 8200 in september of 2002. The manual states that it
only supports 2GB max. Dell was using RDR back then. I don't know
the details of the RAMBUS specification or it's history, but perhaps
that is some sort of limitation imposed by the RDR, and they haven't
bothered to changed the print yet? Eh, who cares.

Well anyway, here is the link

The 8300 is upgradeable to 4GB.
I will assume that Dell's original spec was due to the fact that 1GB DDR was
not common (nor in their catalog) originally. It is now and while I can not
find it right now, I believe in their own forums a Dell Tech (term used
lightly) even stated that 4GB is (now) the correct answer

Thanks for the replies.

I'm in the UK so the Dell website works a little differently to the US one -
you guys over the pond seem to get a whole shedload of different options
where you can configure a system right down to where they stick the "intel
inside" sticker!

Well, not quite, but you get my drift.

The UK site's a little less generous with options and doesn't allow you to
specify 4gb of memory, hence my original question.

Looks like 4gb it is then, let's just hope XP Pro handles 4gb of memory
better than ME tried to with anything more than 512mb!

*IN THE OLD DAYS* you could rest assured that the specifications from
consumer-oriented computer manufacturers could hold far more memory than
the specifications.

This was because they were:

1. Trying to get you to buy the higher end system

and

2. Just going by the memory modules available
(usually by them) at the time.

Every older dell system I have @#$%ed with (I help as many people out
that need it and can't afford it as I can+++) can hold 256 MB dimms when
they advertise 128MB, etc.

*NOW THIS IS DIFFERENT* with 32 bit bus architectures, since 4GB, well,
is all she wrote. When the world is 64 bit everywhere, then heck, we
got lots more to use.

Which is moot. Bill Gates pointed out that no one would ever need more
than 640K.

+++OT: There are an awful lot of people that are out of work that live
and die by their ability to get on line and look for work, as well as
create a resume. Their old systems die: they're in deep guac when they
can't afford it. Guys like the folks in these newsgroups might want to
consider passing the word to friends of friends that we can help such
folks. But there are of course limits. I'm not a tree hugger LOL :)

While using is ok, actually /writing/ free software is a disingenuous
activity. You can afford to write software for free only because of
someone else somewhere actually paying for it. Just say no.

There's 4 slots. As far as I know the biggest memory stick you can
buy for this unit is 512mb. You do the math. Besides, I doubt you'd
see a big difference after 1 gb.

You are correct in that there are 4 slots.

But, you CAN buy 1GB sticks for 'this unit' so you better redo the math.
Try doing some 3D rendering or video editing and tell me you see no
difference after 1GB!

Yeah, I should have looked it up. Apologies.

Maybe the better question- How much money do you have?
