Your Favorite Apocalyptic/Post Apocalyptic Flicks

I suspect that many of members are fans of apocalyptic/post-apocalyptic/dystopian flicks because they tend to be sci-fi based. The question then is what are your favorite flicks that fit into the genre(s)?

My personal favorite is "I Am Legend." I read the short story some years back (in grade school) and was pumped when the movie came out. Needless to say, it didn't disappoint in my eyes. Another is "Children of Men," even though I thought the book was better than the movie. Others include "Sunshine," the Terminator flicks, "The Postman," "12 Monkeys," "Robocop," "Daybreakers," "The Chronicles of Riddick," "V for Vendetta," "Minority Report," and "Gattaca."

"The Road". I also have to say I am really enjoying AMC's "The Walking Dead".

"Alien" and "Aliens". The other 2 or 3 don't count lol. "Aliens" is one of my favorite movies of all time.

"Serenity" and the "Firefly" series.

Lol all my DVDs fit this category. "28 Days/Weeks Later".

"Resident Evil" series.

Totally forgot "Deep Impact". Much better movie than "Armageddon" that came out about the same time.

I agree, Deep Impact was far superior to Armageddon. Armageddon was too corny for my tastes.

Chronicles of Riddick was good but Pitch Black was the 1st Riddick movie and better IMHO
Alien and Aliens are timeless forget the rest of the sequels.

I forgot "The Day After". Scary stuff for a mid 80s made for TV movie.

Ah yes, I forgot to be specific about Pitch Black, as it was definitely the best flick of the series. Who knew that getting a "shine job" could help you see better in the dark?

Soylent Green is another classic, along with Omega Man

The Road, Book of Eli, I Am Legend and 28 Days Later are good modern ones

I enjoyed the book version of "The Road," but not the movie. I guess the images I had in my head from the book didn't line up with the movie.

A very rare and highly underated film and my personal pick is

It's raw reality is something that most movies gloss over. Everyone dies.

Next has to be

Very trippy... and everyone dies!

I also loved the original 'Omega Man' http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067525/ with Charlton Heston.
This was the movie that Wil Smith's 'I am Legend' was based on. Which I did like and thought was
very good for a remake! I was heart broken when his dog was killed...

Of course I loved all terminator movies, and mad max and also cyborg with Jeanne Claude Van Damne.

I love to read and for a great post apocalyptic book with a twist is 'Courtship Rite' by Donald R. Kingsbury

Actually the 1964 "Last man on earth" with Vincent Price was the original movie - still not as good as Omega Man IMHO.

Oh you are right! A constant theme that never gets old in my book! Vincent Price was very good in it as well. I love old movies (*classics) and do not find them nearly as camp as some make them out to be! Altho a good evening with MST3K cannot be put down! LOL! Ever notice how much they drank in the sci-fi movies of the 50's and 60's? Oh speak of which.... which old sci-fi was it where the aliens injected the teens with alcohol from their finger nails?! That was a great old movie!

You won't be disapointed at all! Very sad, realistic and makes the horrors of nuclear war very clear. It is not watered down for the public. Takes you up cloase and personal with raditaion sickness and the death that results from it. NOT FOR KIDS!!! Unless you do progressive parenting and allow your kids to see life in it's rawest form. Great acting and well worth purchasing!

I checked it out and I did enjoy it. Like you said, very realistic. Plus, it tends to cover the actual human story of what many would experience if such an even occurred. Most flicks in the genre deal with the military aspects of it all, but this one really drives the point home of what would happen to countless families.

I'm glad you could check it out! I found the fact that one of the main characters was a disabled boy made it different in the mix of characters. How Jane Alexander manages to cope and the sadness of everything around her just falling apart was very moving.

I read and see selective movies quite often. As much as I am tied to a computer a good book or movie is a god send!

Excellent book... Courtship Rite, by Donald R. Kingsbury (* http://www.donaldkingsbury.com/ ) post apocalyptic, where cannibalism is ritual and you better be able to make and keep a LOT of friends! Extremely engaging! I highly reccomend it as well.

On a side note, maybe even OT. Maia by Richard Adams (* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maia_(novel) ) the writer of Watership Down. This is a very excellent book... not about bunnies at all! Adult oriented, in a fictional society. Totally engrossing. Strong sexual content so be aware that it is not a "bland" adventure novel!

There is an actual I Am Legend Book. Very good built around vampires though (movies ones, ya know garlic and crosses) but the story is compelling. Some guy survives the vampire apocalypse, while being a huge alcoholic, and the way the writer describes his loneliness is 10x better than any turd Will Smith made.

i guess i am legend which is based off last man on earth, but id really like to see a fallout adaptation movie, be kind of cool , and also i enjoyed book of eli, and thats about it
