I have seen many of the rare games like BBB or KP, but were these rare
low production games just a thing of the 80-90s era or were there RARE
one-offs produced before that never saw the production line?

Try this:

1) Go to www.ipdb.org

2) click on Advanced Search

3) Populate "Year of Release" field with "1947-1979" (without the
quotes). I arbitrarily chose 1947 because that's when flippers began,
but you can choose an earlier year of, say, 1932 if you want. I chose
1979 because you had asked for games prior to the 80's.

4) Populate "Games Produced" field with "<11" (again, without the
quotes. "Less than 11" is arbitrary, we could have chosen a smaller
number.)

5) Select "Sort by Date" from the pull down menu.

6) Click the "Search Database" button.

You will see quite a few games which a production run of none, 1, 2, 4,
or "few".

Hope this helps.

Dunno about which is first but I do know Gottlieb was quite fond of
building one off test games. Steve Charland owns at least two games that
are one of a kind, that I know of. He also owns quite a few of the other
very rare Gottliebs that were not one offs. The nice thing is that he
actually lets people play them! He would never see his games as museum
pieces. They were made to be played so by golly we play 'em! :)

Start searching the internet pinball database for one of's. or look for Mike
Pacak's old post on rgp for rare titles. Now some games like BBB and KP had
their company close on them, while Krull and Goin Nuts weren't considered
good enough to produce. Most of the one of's fall into that category. Some
exceptions would be the one Kabuki made for the head of Namco when he was
sick, the other one was a copy that was made. And a few games were made for
an individual, but copies have surfaced too. So best do your homework. And
some not all is known, Williams pinball circus was supposed to have a run of
2 or 4, but there seems to have been a couple more of them. Fun stuff to
study. LTG :)

It's not the first proto/offshoot ever but definitely in the
unusual/rare/interesting category is the "blue display" Eight Ball
Deluxe with the prototype 6803 CPU. Some pics and info on it at my
