Medusa - match "5" for extra ball

Okay, I've read the instruction card and I still don't know what the
voice is referring to - anyone know?

Incidentally, my Medusa is just starting to rock, now that the lower
flippers have strength and the sound card is fixed. Amazing how much
game play is lost without strong flippers or sound.

Thanks, Q

>From memory, it has to do with the display in the playfield scrolling.
Something has to be completed, (a target?), when the display shows "5"
to award the extra ball. It's a timing thing.

Where is our current Medusa owners?

The easy answer is it's the match feature on the playfield display. I'm
in the process of putting in a new power supply so if you give me a few
hours I'll play a game and tell you how it activates. (I think it's
activated by the targets on the left side of the playfield) The number
is not always 5. That is random and changes as well. The numbers
constantly change on the display until the ball drains. If your
changing # matches the number selected then you are awarded a free
ball. That's the simple answer. I'm sure there is more. This is not an
easy thing to accomplish. Hope that helps. Enjoy the game. It's alot of
fun,

Hitting the Medusa Bonus 1,2,3, targets on the left side of the
playfield in order activates the voice and tells you your match #. The
center display: Like Numbers Awards Bonus shows the machine # on the
left as your # on the right constantly changes. That # stops when the
ball drains. Bonus awarded if #'s are the same. I did not check
settings for the targets or for the bonus.

Anything else I might be able to help you with regarding the game? This
is a terrific game! I just wish I could have more consistent games. I
would be curious to hear if you think it is as difficult as I do when
you have it on conservative settings and really have to earn your
points.

So to match the random number on the left of the display, I have to
wait for the right to change to a match, then let the ball drain?

I haven't had Medusa up and running in a while, and before that I had
never played the real deal, so thanks. I still have to repair the limp
zipper flippers to really see how it holds up against the others.

One other question - my machine does not have continuous sound playing,
but the virtual pinball does. I haven't read the manual yet (which I
do have) concerning audio settings, so I'm wondering if that's just a
sound option?

Thanks, I love the game's artwork, and bringing it back to full life -

No, you don't let the ball drain. You try to hit a target, I believe,
at the same time the number is in the display.

I don't know about visual pinball but background sound is an "option".

This game is highly under rated, mostly because of short ball time on
the playfield. Medusa can be a tough mother!

That's cool, Ray! How'd you get that?

I've got to fix the test button to get into the settings and adjust the
sound on mine, but I agree with Mario - definately an underrated game!

- Q

(Hitting a target makes more sense than letting it drain, I'll look
closer to see which target that's supposed to be.)

Mario I guess that I need some help with the ruleset as well. When the
ball drains seems to be the only time it stops. I've been known to be
incorrect before. It's a tough game I agree!

Ray....I'd like to know how you got the # one as well. Was it a tough
sell at the time? It came within a month of Centaur being released. Get
that baby out of mothballs.

Q The sound setting is # 18 on the self test. Set to #3. Got to fix
that. You are doing alot to the game. Sounds like it needed some TLC?

I've had to rebuild the sound card, both lower flippers (swapping the
convient red translucent flippers my FG came with), wiring issues under
the playfield and some contact switch problems, and will rebuild the
upper zipper flipper assembly. There wasn't really much wrong with it.
Just a lot of smaller problems - like the fuse clip on the power
supply that had burned out and been routed off the board completely
with some stray wire.

I had an NOS bg I got a couple years ago for the pin - it took me
awhile to find a machine. After I finish getting it 100%, then I've
got a spare playfield that's been under mylar for most, if not all, of
it's life, that I want to swap in at a later date.

I'm here- but my Medusa is in mothballs.... I have the #1 Medusa- first one
off the assembly line (serial # 001). It's been in my "one of these days"
project pile for years.... "Soon! Soon!"

Got the test button fixed, so I was able to go into setup. Much better
with ALL the sounds playing. Can't wait to rebuild the zipper
flippers - right now they barely move.

Step by step.... -Q

Ok, guys. You have gotten me fired up to get my Medusa going. I
recently bought a pair of the red translucent flippers for mine(lucky
me). Mine does have some large pieces lifting from the bottom of the
backglass. Suggestions on the best way to seal that would be
appreciated.

Thanks, Les

You can do a google search in this newsgroup and find a ton of info on
methods, advice, etc.. I haven't had a BG with that problem yet, so I
don't want to steer you wrong.

As a side note, those transparent flippers rock. The more I fix on my
machine, the more I realize how much better Medusa is than I've always
assumed...

Strangely, I haven't found it to be a drain monster. Don't know what
settings it's at. - Q

Q-Look at the manual and put on the conservative settings. Work for the
points. The best part is the point deduction for hitting that target on
the upper playfield. Not too many games do that. I'm convinced that if
you get good at this game it reflects in your play on others. Last
night I kicked the @#$% out of my Centaur (sister machine to Medusa).
No Dave I still haven't beaten your high score.

Les- Read the posts but I have done a few and I spray some of the clear
coat into a vessle and use a small artist brush and paint the glass to
get the peal to stick. My advice is take your time and read the posts.
Ask lots of questions and see if there is a fellow pinhead in your area
that might assist. I have seen the posts about saran wrap. I have not
tried that method. Where did you get your flippers? Bay Area? They look
great in the machine don't they?

It's great to see some people get excited about this game. I think it's
the snake headed stepsister to Centaur ;)

Hey Q: I think I had the display thing in reverse. Sorry. I'm hoping
you understood? One number changes and tries to match the static one.
The static one is the one the machine announces,

I would like to hear about the repair of your zipper flippers. Are
there any good posts or information on the web? I've only owned the
game about 4 months and they were repaired and work great. My issues
were the setting of the lane gates on both sides of the machine. Those
award big points or the multiplier. Pay special attention to cleaning
them and setting the gaps. They can be finicky. Took me a while to set
correctly. Hope that helps.

Thanks, I'm waiting on parts for the zipper flippers now. Should be
interesting. I checked the manual, the left 1-2-3 targets set the
match number, the right bank of 4 must be dropped to stop the
right-hand number - if they match, you get the prize.

The Gorgons that light with the plunger skill shot - I've noticed that
the lower left gorgon is always lit at the beginning of play - does
anyone know if this is right?

Lit gorgon I think is a dip setting.... If not, I think you always
"get" it because the skill shot always has at least one button lit.

I really have to set Medusa up soon!!!

I was incorrect with my answer. You are correct Q. Dropping the three
targets on the left stops the left digit. Dropping the 4 drop targets
on the right stops the right digit. I took the glass off and fooled
with over the weekend. Thanks for the challenge Mario. I thought I knew
the game and learned something new.

Not sure on the gorgons. Something else to check.
