Hmm...Can't Decide!

Hey guys, first post :)

Just looking for some advice. My current PC is a POS really and as of this month it can't handle new games at all (FarCry on lowest settings lags, Splinter Cell 2 not compatible with video card, etc) and I'm looking to upgrade. Below is my current idea:

AMD 64 3200+ or 3400+
k8v Deluxe mobo
2x512 PC3700 OCZ Ram
ATI x800 XT 256mb

And then all the other stuff that doesn't really need listing. Now, what I'm wondering is: Should I do it? I know the 949 AMD is coming out in...August is it?...but should I wait 3 months with a horrid computer? Basically, I know I'd need to upgrade my Processor+mobo in the future (can a AGP vid card work on the 949s until a PCI is bought?) but would this system be worth it now?

It would scream right now, but would I get good longevity out of it?

Any thoughts are great.

Thanks

Socket939 AMD's coming out in June, the PCI Express will be sometimes in July when the R423 is released. The difference between socket939 and socket754 is minimal, the higher HT doesn't help, dual channel memory doesn't do too much either. you cannot buy the x800xt right now, it's not coming 'til June, you can only buy the x800pro right now.

get the Nforce3 250 mobo, The Chaintech ZNF3-250 is very very nice, MSI K8N Neo platinum, great board, the Asus K8N-E is also great. get the athlon64 3200+, and just standard PC3200 if you're not ocing, if you're ocing, then get the PC3700 ram.

Yea get a nforce 3 250.
The best time to upgrade is almost always now...

Athlon 2700xp+ (oc: 3200xp+ with 200fsb) , Radeon 9800pro (oc: 410/360) , 512mb pc3200 (5-3-3-2), Asus A7N8X-X

The site I am buying from has the x800 XT Platinum on it's list, so I'm still accounting it as my video card since I know they'll have it ASAP and I won't be getting this comp tomorrow. So x800 should work and that's my best choice, right?

3200+ was my idea, and I'm not sure about overclocking. Don't do too much of it, but is it worth it on a AMD 64? Just figured RAM speed either way would help, but you're probably right.

About the mobo, I always hear k8v is the best. Is this for non-OCing or are they wrong? I know nForce3 is awesome to OC with, but if I don't plan to OC (unsure atm) is it still my best bet?

Thanks for the replies. Glad to hear I won't suffer when the new stuff comes. I figured the difference wouldn't be that big and it's not even like game companies can just demand you use the new software ASAP when the costs are so high. Can AGP video cards be used with the new stuff, or is it PCI only? If AGP is usable I'd assume I could prob make this system last 18+ months. Am I wrong there?

:) Thanks

the Asus K8V is a well rounded board, but it's VIA, it sucks for OC, and it's VIA, i'm anti-VIA. I still recommend the Nforce3 250 because it has much more rich features, gigabit lan, and much better raid controller. The price difference isn't that big, so go for Nforce3 250, performance wise at stock they don't have a big difference.

I've heard that PCI-Express and AGP won't coexist on a chipset, therefore if you get the best video card right now, you won't be able to use it on your next PCI-EX mobo/cpu combo. The problem these days with the new top-end cards is that they're always being bottlenecked by the CPU at lower res, so you must play games at 1280x1024 with 4xaa 8xaf at least. To make sure you're pushing out full potential of your card

As for overclocking, the Athlon64's stock cooler's really nice, push Vcore to 1.6V, your chip will still run under 50C, then you're sure to get 2200-2300mhz out of your 3200+(2000mhz default)

I'd pass on the K8V and get whatever version of the K8N Neo fits your needs best.
