Folder views change by themselves:
XP randomly change from Icons to Details, or from Details to Tiles; also randomly change column sizes...
I have Apply to All Folders and Remember each folder's view settings. Using Windows Classic Theme.
I've even reinstalled XP several times, and it happens every time... so I was thinking: Could the files on the installation CD be damaged?
OS = Windows XP (corporate edition)

Thanks for your help

Damage?

Not likely.

This was something that bothered me, too ... but it was corrected when I installed SP1.

Since we are on the subject of weird WinXP behavior:

The thing that SP1 didn't fix was with My Favorites. Any bootmark I had created with a specific "name" (for my own personal organization) appeared three times, with the second and third entries being the original name of the bookmark when it was first made, although I always edit them before placing the new bookmark into a folder.

This happened when I first transferred my saved Favorites folder from Win2K into WinXP, and it happened again when SP1 was installed.

I have over 2000 bookmarks, so that required a lot of checking and editing to remove the duplicates. I had to manually delete something like 3500-4000 entries. Twice.

This still happens periodically, although not to all the bootmarks at once ... just a few, regardless of the folder or file attributes that I select. The more characters that are in the original bootmark for a page or site, the more likely that a second entry will appear, and it appears that the length of the second entry will cause WinXP to display it again. My best guess ... 60 characters or more, three entries. Less ... two entries.

Interestingly enough, I don't lose the bookmark that I created. I just have three that point to the same page.

Aren't Windows bugs wonderful things? I'd like to kiss Bill right on his little fuzzy cheek, and then gently motivate him with a tap from a tire iron.

What if you remove the NTFS permission for SYSTEM on My Favorites folder? Or leaving your user name the only person who has full control on the folder, subfolders, and the files.

Nice try, but ...

I'm the sole administrator on the home network, with no other users.

And I'm running FAT32.

I see... but I still wonder if this will work if you use NTFS and remove the permission for SYSTEM and leave Administrator the only account that has full control...

Also, you wouldn't happen to know what's controlling the folder views, do you? I've heard so many problems with SP1, that's why I haven't installed it...

That's probably an excellent suggestion. However, if that was the case, I wonder why the same problem didn't occur in Win2K/FAT32, with a similar setup?

I may have to live with it then, because I don't care much for NTFS, and won't be converting the file system, even if it would solve the problem.

The files that I believe are controlling the folder views are ComCtl32.dll & SHELL.DLL, but don't take my word for that.

Personally, I haven't run into any problems with SP1, either with the Express or the Network installation. I've installed it onto systems with both Intel and VIA chipsets without any incidents.

mine does it also - win2k. VERY annoying, I set it to list, and it randomly changes back, this is the same for local and mapped network drives.

Interesting... so it happens on all xp & 2000 since it's a bug?
