laptop SATA cable to 3 0 cable

Hello,
on my old dell inspion 5100 I wish to remove the hard drive, plug into it's deep slot a cable leading to a 3.0 usb plug connecting a new external hard drive. what do I need?

All you need to do is to clone the existing hard drive to a new higher capacity hard drive, and then install the new drive into the existing slot. It will work fine.

(BTW, I still have my Dell Inspiron 5150; now running with a new cloned 250 GB hard disk).
