windows boot, pause when starting up

i have xp professional



when i start up, it boots quickly landing at the desktop with all my icons, but there is a 45 second pause before i can open any programs or do things like open the advanced display options window. about the only thing I can do is open IE, and windows explorer to browse my hard drive. then all of a sudden everything starts opening and things are great.


it happened with two windows installs now, and also has happened to my roomates computer who had used a different xp cd. the only simililarity was that we both have Ti4200s, that is until i got my 9800pro two weeks ago. i hvae formatted sinse then and it is still happening. i dont have alot of crap installed, and i know how to clean my system (i work in residential internet technical support, cleaning spyware/viruses is what i do all day)

this is driving me insane. it triples my rebooting time when i am messing with drivers as well (which i do alot).


anyone know what to do about this?

Have you checked the start menu lately? Go to run, and type in "msconfig" and hit enter. Click start menu. Uncheck everything. That should help. Look through the other tabs as well. There is one that starts off with a wait state for deciding on boot (in case you want to boot to linux or something else) Reduce this to 1. Hope this helps.

assign a static IP address, and your problem should go away. I used to have the same issue until I did that. And hooking up a DHCP capable router also solves it, its just XP that is trying to obtain an IP lease when there is nothing attached that gives you one.

but my modem should let xp renew the lease shouldnt it? the only way i can have a static ip is to get a router, and i wont be for a little bit

Oh, you have a modem hooked up to your NIC that assigns you an IP through DHCP ? Is that a local IP (192.168.x.x) ? if, so you can safely make it static. If not, hmm.. could be worth trying nevertheless, just assign the IP you currently have statically, and see if it solves the problem. My guess is it will. But of course if you ISP changes your IP frequently, this won't keep working.

Have any unused NIC's perhaps ?

I have no idea what you mean by a "normal DHCP connection". Do you have an USB modem, ethernet modem or a broadband router ? And does your computer get an IP assigned by the modem (in the 192.168.x.x range) and therefore, acts like a router, or does windows actually use the IP issued by your provider ?

Also, do me a favor and open a command prompt, and type ipconfig /all and paste the result here. (Feel free to replace the last numbers of the IP addresses with "x", as well as hiding your mac address for privacy/security reasons). I'm still fairly certain its a DHCP issue that can be resolved, but I need more info.

i have a cable modem, and i get an ip from my ISP. authentication is done with the mac off my nic, or if you are going thru usb the modem has a separate mac attached to its usb port i think (or it could be something the usb driver assigns). the modem has its own ip in the 10.x.x.x range. only reason i know this is because i can check from work

interesting, my ip lease was obtained when I woke up for work. i wonder if its doing this every time it boots up? because it doesnt have to, my ISP has 7 day ip leases

So.. I'm still not sure I'm reading this correct. It looks like you have 2 nics, the onboard nVidia lan, and the 3Com. Or is the 3Com really your USB modem perhaps ?

Either way, the "3Com", is not getting an IP through DHCP. If its a real nic, go to the networking setup and assign it a static (non routable) IP. My guess is that should solve your poblem. If its not a real nic, but an alias for your USB (?) modem, see if you can configure an IP somewhere nevertheless, maybe in the driver settings. Either way, I'm fairly certain if it is through an USB modem, that this is what is causing your trouble. Disconnect it, and I want to bet you will not see this long startup delay. Wanna bet ?

If its a real nic you use for something else, I'm even more certain Give it an IP (or enable DCHP on whatever device/computer it is connected to), and enjoy your quick booting again.

nVidia nic is plugged into the modem


3com nic is plugged into my roomates computer, using Internet Connection Sharing, hence the 192 ip




his computer is off right now because hes on vacation, but the lag still happens if his comptuer is on. and the IP on my end is static, ICS sets me up as a DHCP server for his computer.

crap.. I never used ICS, so I am not sure, but maybe you could try and disable the DHCP server on your part ? Or just plain unplug the UTP cable, see if it helps. Maybe the delay is not XP trying to obtain an IP, but trying to configure the remote machine ? If so, just give your friend a static IP address as well once he is back, there is not much point in assigning it dynamically anyway.

Oh, and just in case I'm completely off the mark, and the boot delay is not DHCP related (which would surprise me, but I've been wrong before), here is another simple thought: check your eventlog , and see what is taking so long. A 45 second delay should be easy to spot.

Let me know. Just unplugging the cable might also work though. Takes 2 minutes to try that.

Easy. Right click "my computer", choose "manage", and you'll see somewhere at the top "logfiles" or something in "system work set". Could be called differently though, just translating from my Dutch windows. check the system and application logs

I speak english yes, as well as a few other languages, but dutch is still my native tongue.

however, i must admit in the beginning I really didn't like my software in dutch, after 15 years of being used to the english terminolgy, I had to think again seeing the dutch translations for words like "file, edit, paste, run,..". Now I'm used to it, and I prefer it over english. The only horror is when I have to support french speaking collegues or friends that use french software. Even though i'm quite fluent in french, i don't think I'll ever get used to terms like "Fichier, logiciel, farde, coller,.." (file, program, folder, paste). I've given training sessions in french, but I've always refused them when it wasn't on english software

The most extreme case was a couple of years ago when a japanese manager came over, and I had to install some custom software we made on his.. japanese version windows. I had to put a dutch (or english, i forget, doesnt matter) computer next to his laptop, and compare step for step, menu per menu to see what the hell I was doing i really hope a next version of windows will let you change (at least OS) language dynamically and/or profile based, like keyboard layouts or currency settings.

...but.. we're getting off topic now. have you tried removing the UTP cable and/or disabling ICS yet ?

and i too feel the pains of languages.. theres alot of Asian internet customers that live in Toronto (major city in canada) , and they often have chinese or japanese versions.. man its IMPOSSIBLE to tell someone who doesnt speak english well in the first place, how to get around the menus in windows because often the words will not translate.. like telling them to "click on start, then select run" may not translate to what they have, because it may be "start and then go" instead in their language..

but yea ill try that stuff when i get home. feck i hope it works because its SO annoying! oh i should note that this is a completely new computer now (except for the HDD, cdrom, and extra pci nic), and it is still happening after i formatted and resintall xp pro..

Disable bothe nics in device manager, then reboot. If that solves the problem, get a 4 port dsl router. They are cheap, you can asign any mac you want, and you are a good candidate anyhow.
