Is it possible to search for folders by name or date modified?

Yes, you just need to enter the information as you normally would - and any
folders matching the criteria that you've selected will be displayed in the
search results along with any files that meed the criteria.

You can sort the list by clicking on the top of the column where it says
"Name" - that'll bring the folders to the top of the list.

Start|Search: *. <then folder name>

You will find there is also option for 'When was it modified?'
