Many users poopoo/despise the use of so-called registry
cleaners. Just for the helluvit, I downloaded "RegSeeker" and
ran it to see what was up with it. Using the 'Clean the
registry" tab, I was very surprised to find
over 700 questionable entries, most of which were "File or Path
does not exist" and " Invalid ActiveX/Com entry (CLSID)". I just
bought this computer so expected SOME residual trash, but this
is ridiculous.

Has anyone else come across so many superfluous Registry
entries?

Should I delete any or all of these entries?

Does the Registry "self-clean" in time?

Does WindowsXP run appreciably slower/faster no matter what size
the registry balloons too?

I am not a newbie but am seeking more opinions.

Thanks, in advance.

I'm one of them. The risk of their causing a problem is greater
than any potential benefit they may provide.

Many people have.

I wouldn't delete anything automatically. If you are savvy enough
to clearly understand what you are doing and know exactly what
each entry you are deleting is, then fine.

No.

Registry size makes little or no measurable difference.

There is no problem caused by a registry cleaner that cannot be
corrected by a clean install.

I was using Registry Mechanic and I became unable to boot up and unable to
access my A drive for a startup disk. I was using ME and finally had a
technician repair the puter. He installed XP pro. Anyway, I don't know if
Registry Mechanic was at fault, but I won't use any such gizmo now. I had
Norton AV and had no viruses. I now use the free version of AVG. I don't
know what caused my problem, but I'm not taking any chances with any
registry cleaner or with Norton.

I like SystemSuite 5's Registery Fixer (v-com.com). It groups the results
grouped as green, yellow and red. The greenies are probably OK to delete,
although some may just pop back. The yellow ones should be looked at
carefully but most of them can be deleted. The red ones should be looked at
very carefully and most of them should be left alone. It has an "undo"
feature in case you deleted or changed something you shouldn't have.
