Ok, building this for a friend, wanna see your comments:
AMD Athlon 64 3000+
Abit K8V Pro mobo
2x512 Apacer DDR400
Sapphire Radeon X800 OEM
Primary drive: WD 74Gb Raptor
Secondary: 200GB Maxtor 7200 RPM
Using onboard audio
Standard 52x burner, 16x dvd drive, etc.
Case: <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?descripti..." target="_new">Powmax case w/ 400W PSU</A>
Does that case look ok, and will the 400PSU hold?

The setup is sexy, but the case is just ok. But for the price your paying, it's pretty nice. I always like antec cases. Simple yet well built and easy to work with. But a nice antec with a psu will set you back alot farther than that case/psu.

AMD64 2800+
MSI Neo-Fis2r
512mb Kingmax ddr400
Sapphire 9800pro 128mb

I would rather have an NF3-250 board and <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?descripti..." target="_new">this case</A>, since I just built one. You can put the temp sensor right on the 250 chipset heatsink. Pretty fly for cheap case. Also, it would be nice if we could see the 12v rail amps on the Pow-Max power supply you're getting. Note that Dynapower lists theirs.

Hmm, that seems deviously cheap...what's the catch? Honestly guys tho, does the 400w psu seem enough?

I don't know that there is one! I have built five systems based on that case in the last year and no issues what-so-ever. This last on had the rail voltages almost dead on! I'm not saying they won't fail someday, but I love them so far and I absolutely love putting the temp sensor right on the 250 chipset heatsink. It even has a switch to turn off the light show if you want to. Great front out-puts and well marked cables. No wonder the NewEgg reviews are mostly positive! I wouldn't put (6) drives in it, but so far so good.

Junk. Never give VIA your money and NEVER use a crap power supply. Take a look <A HREF="http://www.sysopt.com/articles/PSU_Perspectives/index2...." target="_new">Here</A>, that second photo is a PowMax, they're the WORST power supply on the market. I mean the WORST, as in, if you're lucky enough to get the system to operate with a little stability the thing will blow up in a couple months anyway.

Every so often I go to the shop and grab a crate of bad PowMax power supplies, take them home, replace the blown capacitors, and resell them to that shop for $10 each.

I get the caps out of old AT power supplies, etc, so it's a labor-only proposition.

What are some decent power supply brands/makes/models?

<font color=purple>there is no such thing as a free lunch...</font color=purple>
June 22, 2004 5:21:34 AM

Let me guess. Fortron. Enermax (by fortron models only) and sunny ( guess which units... right, the ones made by fortron).

You're building an already costly system.... can't you justify another $100 dollar for a decent case and $60-80 for a decent power supply?

My PSU is a Sparkle I bought a year and a half ago.

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?descripti...

My only complaint is it's not as quiet as an Antec psu.

Or perhaps it's my 6 case fans... don't think they sell this case anymore

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?descripti...

but it's similar to this... but has 2 lower front, 2 rear, 1 side and 1 top fan. Instead of a window, it has just brushed aluminum, with gold fan grates. It's worth it to have a case put together with thumb screws.

Best way to save money on these systems is the buy Lite-on drives in. They do their job, and they're cheap.

Also, you're giving him an insane amount of Hard Drive space. Buy a DVD-burner instead.

LOL, Enermax makes their own power supplies.

Well, there's Fortron Source and Sparkle Power, followed by Aopen with FSP model numbers, Enermax is good, Enlight is fairly good too.

There's high end units like PC Power&Cooling and Zalman, which basically add better cooling or quieter fans.

Oh, then there's overprice mid quality stuff like Antec and Herolchi.

$160-$180? He could get an Enlight or Inwin case WITH a decent power supply for around $60. For around $100, he could get an Antec case with power supply.

As I understand it, the "better" power supplies are better because they deliver power closer to their rated output. So a cheap 400W PSU might only deliver 350W, while a quality 400W PSU will deliver 400W (or close to it).
