How do disable autoplay once and for all? I have tried telling XP not to take any actions when
I insert a CD or flash card or turn on a USB drive, but XP always scans the drive, as if it is
looking for some file/content-type that it can ask about.

I don't want XP to do ANYTHING with ANY type of media. Ever. How do I do this?

gpedit is for Pro.

For Home, do this:

Invoke regedit in Run. Hit the plus (+) signs on the following keys:

HKCurrentUser - Software - Microsoft - Windows - Current Version - Policies.

Then click Explorer. In the right pane you should see a Reg_Dword entry called NoDriveTypeAutoRun.

Double-click and change the value to b1.

Russell:

You have a little bit of an attitude.

Firstly, your post wasn't up while I was working on Haku's reply.

Secondly, I have given him the reg file contents. My instructions are cake to follow, and he'll learn more going down in there himself.

Sorry, I didn't realize that you hadn't seen my post yet. As a matter of fact, I'm sorry to say it didn't occur to me. I should have looked at the time stamps.

Thank you for helping with everyone's questions .

By the way, you're right, sometimes I cop an attitude. Sorry.
