System P4 2.4/533 with 1GB RAM, GF 4 4600 etc.

Would I notice an upgrade to a P4 3.06/533 with HT if I want to add some life to my system before these go end of life this year. I'm thinking of a VGA upgrade at some point but don't want to spend £300 on that to find that the CPU is holding me back and that £150 there and £150 on VGA was a better move.

Advice anyone?

I don't think it's worth the cost of the upgrade. Why don't you just overclock it a bit? That 2.4 should easily do 2.8 by upping the FSB a bit.

tough one.. if you are going to upgrade by year's end, spending money on a cpu and/or a videocard that will both be obsolete by then, doesnt sound like a good plan.

Agreed with the above poster, try overclocking... your system should be fast enough for most things things still, no ?

Your system is well balanced. If you get an R9800 pro, it will give you nice shaders, but not much perf. Anything above that, and your cpu will be a bit of a bottleneck, but not too much. If you are thinking high end, there is no guarantee on how long Agp will last, so it may not move to a new system. If you plunk that 6800 in there and boost your fsb to 150 or so, you might be ok for 2 to 3 years.
