If you plan on overclocking make sure you get the xp-m 2500+ barton. It will overclock far better than the desktop version and is around the same price.

AMD64 2800+
MSI Neo-Fis2r
512mb Kingmax ddr400
Sapphire 9800pro 128mb
10K WD Raptor

Barton is a better choice if you plan to overclock. And Barton 2500+ easily overclock to 3200+ by changing the FSB from 166MHZ to 200MHz in the BIOS. Usually it's better to have DDR400 to do this so your FSB and memory are running in synch.

MY CHOICE WOULD BE :
CPU : Barton 2500+ (Or Mobile Barton 2500+/2600+ to overclock like mad!!!)
MEM : DDR400 ram (2x256 or 2x512 for dual-channel)
MB : Abit NF7 or NF7-S (The "S" version have better AUDIO, if you want Dolby 5.1, etc...)

But, if you have a bit more in your wallet, I strongl recommends you to buy a Socket754 with an Athlon 64 2800+ which performs like an Athlon XP 3200+.

i think i will go for the Barton then, since i dnt have enuf money to get the Athlon 64

does it matter much if i get the desktop version? im not sure if im able to get the mobile version...

A new desktop 2500 won't be unlocked. A mobile 2500 WILL be unlocked. You'll likely be able to achieve 2.2Ghz (the same speed as a 3200) with less voltage than a desktop 3200 requires.

Of course, to get this extra power from a Mobile 2500, you're going to need a motherboard that allows you to change the multiplier, voltage, and FSB settings. The Abit NF7 is probably the favored MB by overclockers, but you'll do fine with most any nForce2 MB. I also had plenty of success with my a7V8X (KT400) MB when I had to RMA my nforce2.

if you get a desktop version though, its almost a gurantee that it will go to 3200 without any tweaking at all(no voltage increase). they dont even produce any extra heat(2 degree rise in temp is neglegible for 400 mghz increase)

i'd say that unless you're a power user you could save the 15 bucks and get the desktop version and oc it to 3200 with no problems. and because it will go to 3200 speeds w/o voltage increase of any kind, im sure they can overclock very well.

BTW, if you happen to have an nvidia chipset the multiplier is unlocked no matter what cpu you get.

as gipnor noted, the mobile requires a voltage increase to hit 3200 speeds, with this in mind, it is my assumption that mobiles dont really overclock any better, they just cost more(i have never tried a mobile though, so dont hold me to my word too tightly)

Also as he said, the NF7 is a great motherboard, i bought one for that 2500 and i had full range over everything.

i must also admit, the 2500 i got went into my girlfriends computer, so i set it at 3200 and didn't have any time to max it out.

I've got a book of matches,
I've got a can of kerosene,
I've got some bright ideas involving you and me.

no, I've never heard of a desktop 2500+ getting 2.6 ghz on air like a xp-m 2500+.

.
Yes, most xp-m chips do need more than stock voltage to reach 2.2 gigs. Please remember remember though, that a normal xp chip will not even boot at the stock xp-m voltage of 1.45, and do require .2 more volts, just to begin. A poor ocing xp-m will still outclock a good xp chip. For the most part, the mobile chips are the highest binning of the xp chips.
The xp-m chips are easy to find online in Canada, and the U.S. Anyone outside of that area can post here. I am sure that someone can say weather or not they are locally available.

well yeah, i was just drawing conclusions out of logic because i've never used a mobile. but anway you put it, the 2500 is a great chip, mobile or desktop.

well i live in taipei, not sure if there is any chance for me to get a mobile one...

just to make sure my thoughts are rite, can i just buy any normal desktop barton, along with abit nforce mb to achieve 2.2G (simply increasin the fsb to 200)?

finally, whats the maximum it can achieve? 2.6G?
June 27, 2004 9:49:55 AM

Any of the desktop bartons, and many of the t-breds will reach 2.2 gigs, without much todo. Some may require raising the v-core slightly.
The deal with the 2500 is that it has barton sized cache, and is very cheap.
While most xp chips will exceed 2.2 with a little work, only the mobiles seem reaily able to get above 2.4 on air. It's nice that the multipliers are unlocked, if your board supports it. They also do 2.2 cooler than a stock xp3200.
To find out if anyone here knows if you can get an xp-m chip, start a new thread tittled "XP-M in Taipei?"

Yes, it is very different from mobile to desktop: better overclockablity, unlocked multipliers, low power consumption ... combinations are endless.

True, but with mobile you are starting at 1.45 volts! Mine is running at 2Ghz at just 1.5v and yes, I have to increase 0.05 but still I'm well under desktop Barton (1.65v). And that equals less power consumption, less heat, still headroom to overclock. Most people are getting 2.4Ghz air cooled, and is not strange to hear 2.6Ghz in some cases with voltage overclocking.

I don't think so. Barton mobile 2400+ at newegg for $77. Beat this. And don't tell me to buy 2500+ because if you look carefully at specs it only runs 33Mhz higher!

Still looking for a good online retailer in Spain :frown:

I'm sure graqfreak would love to have an xp-m, but cant seam to find one in Taipei. Any ideas? How did you get one in Spain?
June 29, 2004 12:11:03 AM

I just wanted to mention something, i didn't bother reading the whole thing, but most new 2500+ barton will not be able to hit 3200+'s speed just period.

The 2500+ Barton desktop is a crappy overclocker, they hit 2.0Ghz but not 2.2Ghz without insane vcore let's say 2.0V, You get the 24/25/26 00 mobile, or nothing.
Maybe the desktop 2800+, that'll hit 2.2Ghz

I am from Spain and sincerely don't know at all any Taipei retailer, but my "solution" could be posible for graqfreak too (here in Spain is also very difficult/imposible to find one).

A friend of mine went to USA and I ordered the CPU to newegg giving my friends adress. I tell to AMEX Spain that I would be there for business reasons and that the new temporaly adress is my friends adress.

Newegg is one of the online retailers that allow you to use international cards with US adress. I have look at other but regreatebly NO is the typical answer.

You need to find a friend/relative that is going to use for business, or for an exchange student program, ... not easy, but the only solution that I came from.

Hope this helps!

damn, not alot people seem to care bout version of the barton in taipei, guess i have to settle with the desktop version... does that mean i cant reach 2.2G without insane vcore tweaking? im plannin on gettin the abit NF7-S mb, i heard using this mb i can still oc it even if the cpu is not unlocked, hope thats true...

has anyone just increase the fsb to 200 to achieve 2.2 without adjusting the vcore using the desktop version? i really hope this would work cuz im not really good at ocing...

finally, im plannin on gettin the thermalright 900A and panaflo L1A, u think thats cool enuf? or should i go for the zalman CNPS-7000-cu? thank you guys :p
June 29, 2004 11:18:06 PM

i have a axp 2700+ and i run 11*200 (2.2ghz) on air no voltage increase. Rock solid stability...

Athlon 2700xp+ (oc: 3200xp+ with 200fsb)
Radeon 9800pro (oc: 410/360)
1024mb pc3200 (5-3-3-2)
Asus A7N8X-X
July 1, 2004 9:26:29 AM

the zalman cnps700a Al/Cu at 5V seems to be better cooling performance than the thermalright 900A/Panaflo L1A at 7V (same noise though)

however, i cant get the al/cu version, only the copper version, should i settle with the zalman or the thermalright?

i personally wants to go for the thermalright, but im just a bit scared if the cooling performance is not enuf using the L1A at 7V for my oced barton...\

any suggestion is really appreciated =)

Well 2 of my mates bought 2500+ Desktop chips with NF2 S mobos, and just went into bios and upped fsb to 200 - no problems at all. That was 2 months ago, so its definately not a problem.
