Im thinking of getting this comp as a replacement for my current one. Its $549. Of course I will of course be using it for gaming. I play alot of high preformance required games.

MOBO: Asus K8VSE Deluxe
CPU: AMD Athlon64 3000+
MEMORY: PMI PC3200 1GB

All thoughts appreciated..

Get the MSI K8N FISR, it's the cut down version of K8N Neo Platinum, all it's lacking is the onboard firewire, and it offers only native SATA controller from the Nvidia MCP, no extra SI controller.

The CPU's a decent choice, even though i myself would go for a 3200+ clawhammer.

Is my 3000+ a clawhammer? and is there a difference in the two mobo's speed wise?

Well in theory yes, the single chip solution by Nvidia should have less delay than the VIA's chip, and it supports 1000HT. Let's just leave it as Nvidia's better than Nvidia how's that? the MSI K8N is a superior board than the Asus K8V.

The 3000+ is newcastle, i like the 3200+ clawhammer is because it has 1mb L2 cache, and the reason for that is because... nm just buy the clawhammer if you can still find one.

Yup those will be EXCELLENT, but the CPU's oem, therefore no heatsink/fan.

I'm just using generic samsung ram, since i was broke after buying my A64 system. generic samsung overclocks GREAT, most company just slap on some heatspreader and rate them at higher speed.

Grab some OCZ 3200EB ram if you have cash, if you don't just go for generic samsung.

New egg has it posted they are getting more clawhammer desktops today?:

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProd [...] 416&depa=1

I got one last week. It was the newer cg stepping:

Scott is the a64 man-he'll steer ya right. He is also an overclocking nut. :smile: So if you don't plan to overclock newcastle is actually a bit faster I think??? If you plan to overclock a bit he says go for the clawhammer like I did.

(If you overclock you can raise the speed....but not the cache:> )

currently available athlon 64 3200+ cores:
newcastle=2200 fsb 512 l2 cache
clawhammer=2000fsb 1mb l2 cache

Well I dont know how to overclock or even want to cause it sounds complicated. I checked out the ram, pick out which one ill need.

Im guessing i dont need the upgrade memory or the 64X72Bit for the FX. The only difference i found was the latency, which i have no idea what it does...

you don't want ecc memory unless you are using a cpu that requires it like the fx--...It is more expensive and won't work with most of the a64 platforms.
