Inspiron 700 with Win7...battery life

I installed Win7 on my Dell Inspiron 700. I used the trick I found online to install an older video driver to get 1200x800 resolution. I've found that the remaining battery charge indicated by the battery icon is roughly half the battery life that the computer had under WinXP.

Has anyone else seen something similar? Are there any tweaks to jack up the battery life?

For kicks I installed a 60 GB solid state hard drive and that resolved the issue. Battery now lasts the expected 5 hrs instead of 3.
