I'm shopping around for a mid range system and I've found a couple of package deals at a price in my range, both with similar specs, one Intel system and one AMD.
What would you choose?
Intel Pentium 4 @ 2.8Ghz with 1mb Cache/800Mhz FSB with Hyper-Threading
I'd go with the P4. The reason I say that is because I don't think you know what you're doing, and you're less likely to get a crap board with the P4. Of course you might be getting a good board or bad board with either CPU, but since you didn't say anything, I'm having to guess.

Do not get that P4. If you must have Intel, get the P4c. The extra cache is an attempt to make up for extra pipes. It doesn't work. The P4e 2.8, with 1 meg cache is hotter than the P4c 2.8, but does not perform as well.
I'll be using it primarily for Gaming, Video Editing/Compositing, 3d rendering, and probably some music composition/sound editing stuff..
(Here's an outline of the full system, on the off chance anyone is interested)

The video card is almost $50 cheaper at <A HREF="http://www.anitec.ca/?mode=category&keyword=VIDEO+CARDS&catid=11" target="_new">http://www.anitec.ca/?mode=category&keyword=VIDEO+CARDS&catid=11</A>. Some of thier other prices are also good.
Why don't you assemble and test the system yourself, and "borrow" a version of WIN, or download the free XP 64-bit edition from, microsoft.com, The money you save will compensate for an A64 3500+ on S939 w/ NForce 3 Chipset.
not neccesarily. like ive pointed out before, evne in the areas of 3d rendering, video editing, and audio editing, there are apps that favor athlon 64, so if he is using those apps, athlon 64 is more of a better bet. it comes down to what he uses.
Did you see you're putting pc2700 RAM in a motherboard/proc combo that's designed around a 200 mhz FSB, and thus PC3200 RAM is needed for it to realize full pontential. Also, I would be concerned about that PSU, don't know if it's a quality 350, or a piece of crap that can only really do 200.

I'd suggest a different mobo. I can't be the only one thinking this but why are you getting a mobo with onboard video? Exspecially a s3 onboard, the worst of the worst.
I think you'd be better off with a MSI K8N Platinum.
Wow, I also didn't notice the ram or the prices you are paying. $260 for the a64 2800+ is crazy. I got mine for almost 80$ less and it was retail! If you live in the us go with newegg. Cause them prices are way too high. The graphics card is overpriced also.
edit: nevermind didn't notice you were canadian sorry mate
I chose that mobo primarily because of the price (I know, not always a good way to do it), and it's got a couple of nice features, like integrated firewire support and SPDIF out. As for the onboard vid memory, I obviously don't really need it, but if the price is right, is there anything wrong with having it?
(This is what the system is looking like now <A HREF="http://www.ncix.com/pcbuilder/pcbuilderpreview.cfm?id=1537092&skus=7698-1|11729-1|11100-1|12261-1|10386-1|10866-1|1712-1|11987-1|9560-1|4620-1|9562-1|11181-1|6526-1|7842-0" target="_new">http://www.ncix.com/pcbuilder/pcbuilderpreview.cfm?id=1537092&skus=7698-1|11729-1|11100-1|12261-1|10386-1|10866-1|1712-1|11987-1|9560-1|4620-1|9562-1|11181-1|6526-1|7842-0</A> )
