Problems with flatscreen images on computer monitors

I have an acer 19 inch x193w computer flatscreen monitor. At the bottom of the monitor there is a blot spot which is mostly black with blue and pinkish colors coming out of the black blotch. Is the flatscreen monitor on the fritz. Is this an incidation that the computer flatscreen monitor is on the fritz. The blotch started out as a small area, but now is growing.
What is this phenomenum?

My first guess would be that the liquid crystals are leaking, but a photo would make it easier to diagnose.
