Heatspreader: Necessity or not?

Hey all. I'm building a P4 rig with a P4m and wondering if I need to buy a broken P4 to get a heatspreader for the core, or if I could just install it like you would an Athlon XP. I'm leaning toward installing it bare, but if that is a disaster waiting to happen, let me know.

No, you don't need an heatspreader, just be careful when you install the heatsink. Make sure the contact is good with the CORE. Actually all Athlon XP don't have heatspreaders and millions of them have been installed flawlessly!

By the way, are you sure the P4M and despktop P4 are using the smae socket? I doubt it, P4M use µ-PGA.

I'm new to Intels, but apparently the early P4-M's were basically Northwoods for notebooks. The link has the code for the cpu I bought, which is a 1.6GHz BO stepping 478 pin chip. It sounded really weird to me at first, too. I'll post how it turns out.

Do not take off the heatspreader.

I have to agree they only cause 1-3c temp increase. Removeing it also voids the warrenty and good luck getting it back on to fool some Intel product replacement guy.

This article basically lays out what I intend to do. Since the cpu is spec'd to run 1.6GHz @ only 1.3vCore, I'm hoping for a nice OC result. I've got 15% vCore boost just to get up to what the stock BO stepping run on the desktop! I've read that the multiplier defaults to 12 when used on a desktop, because of the speedstep, but that shouldn't be a problem. I'm figuring worst case scenario is a 2.4-2.6 GHz chip, best case is somewhere around 3.0 I guess.

I'm not taking it off, I'm using a mobile chip that never had a heatspreader. Just wondering if cooling it the way an AMD XP does: READ-Core is directly on HS- will work. Everybody seems to agree that it will work, so I'll give it a shot.

here's a better article. It's exactly what I'm gonna do:
