Would someone be kind enough to give a newbie an answer to a key question as it relates to the hardware necessary to capture video.
I have analog video tapes that I would like to transfer to my computer and ultimately DVD. What hardware do I add to my system to achieve this transfer? Capture card? IEEE 1394? RCA-to-phono jack?
And what sort of resolution can I expect to achieve.
Before we get into hardware let me mention that a copy can never be better then and original so if you are starting out with old analong tapes and transfer to dvd the quality will not be dvd quality but only as good as the tapes were at best.
You need a dvd burner, a capture card and some software. You do not need 1394/firewire with an analog tape. Firewire is only needed for dv tapes. The cable you need should come with the capture card. The capture card will usually come with some software but you may need additional software to convert formats or edit. The capture card is the key to what you want to do and you should not skimp on this or you will be sorry. Do not get a usb type capture sustem as these lack the bandwidth to do a quality capture. Get a PCI or AGP capture card.
Store bought DVDs are recorded in MPEG2 format and if you want to burn a DVD compatable disk you will need to capture in MPEG2 format. Vcds are recorded in MPEG1 format and can also be played on a dvd player. The advantage of vcd is that you can record a vcd with a regular old cdr burner. Some standalone dvd players can not play vcd or cdr or burnt dvds. Check http://www.vcdhelp.com for compatability and help converting and recording video.
Give me fuel, give me fire, give me that which I desire.
