crashing

i'm running windows me under a two computer network, which the other running 98
it keeps crashing whenever i defrag or open scandisk
it wouldn let me access my other computer too
when it does, it will hang and i need help here
but quite surprisingly when i do other stuffs like word, inetrnet or even games, it would run fine
i'm suspecting there is something to do with my network
