I don't normally do these price checks but I have an opportunity to buy this
game and I'm not too aware of what they are worth . SUPPOSEDLY the playfield
and backglass are in great shape with no paint loss or peeling etc but the
cabinet and wood need touching up etc . That has yet to be determined as I
haven't looked at it yet & it's not working so I'm sure it's going to need
some work. He's asking $625 . I'm not really interested in keeping it but to
make money on it , possibly getting it working and putting it on ebay . Any
room to make money on it at that price ?
thanx much for any input !
Ron

I wish you the best of luck, Ron. Truly. However, I don't see how
this purchase by you would in any way be in the best interests of our
hobby. It might be advantageous for you and for eBay, but for the
hobby itself? I don't think so. I don't have anything against people
making money in pinball, but I don't want to contribute toward higher
prices for games, either. If you don't buy this machine, then maybe
the person who does will keep it rather than trying to flip it for a
profit. For this reason, I think I'll keep any opinion of its value to
myself. That isn't a knock on you, Ron, and if someone can suggest a
reason why *higher* prices for machines actually help pinball, I might
change my mind. CARGPBers?

Manic wrote something a few months back that I agreed with and keep
being reminded of, i.e., that this newsgroup isn't called
"rec.makeabuck.onpinball." I guess I've become as much of a curmudgeon
as he is.

2003 MrPinball price guide says 950.
I think I saw one on ebay that went for more or about same price.
What the hell, pick it up. Those old machines are easy to fix...

1. More valuable machines means more restorations, more restorations on
lower number machines means more momentum for reproductions, more machines
saved, etc...

2. More value means makers are more likely to renter the market. Does the
boy from down under really want to get into making machines that no one is
interested in buying for primo money, if MM went for even $2K no one would
see value in remaking them.

3. The value of a collectible is driven by demand, how could demand for pins
be a bad thing for the hobby, maybe bad for people wanting a deal/steal but
not the hobby

I have more, but I think it is the exact reverse of what you are stating. I
think in fact it would be hurting the hobby by trying to suppress prices by
limiting its exposure to the masses who drive up the prices. I am the first
to crab about prices, make no mistake, I do not see appreciation as a bad
thing, nor someone turning an honest buck. -Joshua

There has been in the past, and continues to be a LOT of backglass
reproductions being made for woodrails and other EM games. Shay Assad, Ron
Webb, Steve Engel and some others are doing this. There have been a lot of
titles made. There is also a growing number of reproduction plastics for
these games as well. And I know of at least two or three repro playfields in
the works for these games right now and probably more down the line once the
makers see that they are in demand. There's a lot of repro stuff going on
for woodrails that this group is totally unaware of. There's a whole other
community of people who maintain ties with each other and they don't need a
newsgroup to do so.

I'd bet good money that very few of those repros end up on walls. I mean who
wants to spend nearly $300 just to hang something on the wall? EM collectors
buy these to put in games. Other collectors aren't even interested in those
glasses.

Marvin;
I agree with most of what you said. Hobbists and enthusiasts like
yourself find a way to make the important things happen. I did say
manufacturers are NOT interested in this sort of thing, because real
money cannot be made here, so are far as argument#2 goes, no one is
going to enter the market to make this. Hobbists are motivated by
interest and if the monetary thing works out, so much the better. Is
there a BINGO machine manufacturer, repro-ing BGs & PFs ? NO, but
there are some hardcores who do it. Wayne, IPB, et al, are not looking
into this.

Guys like you would make what you really need, even if woodrails
were worth $50. Higher prices discourage the curious, I think. That is,
until it reaches some kind of tulip bulb frenzy, then all bets are off.

sorry to offend you , I didn't realize we changed from a capitalist to a
socialist society . It may be a hobby for you but it's a business for me .
But just for personal entertainment , maybe you would like to explain to me
how lower prices help the hobby ?
