I need a new printer!

I'm looking to buy a new printer, and I was wondering if I could get some tips on what to look for for a printer.

What would I look for in a printer for, say, just a generally good all around printer?
What would I look for in a printer for, say, printing photographs or graphic design work?

I'm also wondering if there are any things advertised about printers that I should ignore?
Like, are there any specs that are just marketing gimmicks?
