I was wondering, would it be prefectly legal if I just found a windows 98 SE cd laying around and installed it on my pc. But i used the product code from a windows 98 cd (first release) that i bought a while back?

I don't know if the 1st edition product code would work on an SE installation, but that's irrelevant, in terms of legality.

Neither the CD nor the product code matters, just the software license. If it only applied to Win '98 1st edition, then you have no valid license for SE.

Having said that, I doubt even MS would give a stuff. And if you must use Win 9x products, 98se is best. So go for it

Is this a trick question?

No, it's not legal. And the older product key won't work.

Oh its not legal... that sucks... But the weird thing is my friend installed it on his and the old code worked... i was like hmmm that shouldnt work... unless he is a moron and really did have a SE code... oh well i was just wonderin...

Thanks yall

Actually Toe, yes it will.

I've tried 98 First Edition keys on SE just for the purpose of finding out if they worked or not, and they do. The problem comes in if you're using an UPGRADE key... those won't work on full versions of either OS.

*Edit* You were right about the legality of it though... hehe... but I know the old keys work with SE... I also know the SE keys won't work with the first edition. Strange.

I stand corrected. Thanks, Zoron.

Come to think of it, I don't think I ever did try to install Win98SE with a First Edition key. It just didn't occur to me that it might work. And I <i>have</i> seen lots of SE upgrade disk keys, and I recall that they are different.

Oh, well ... learn something new every day.

Perfectly legal as long as you don't get caught. In fact the SE upgrade without the extras was a legal download. The extras would cost you money though.

isnt everything :)

98 1st keys will work on all 98 1st installs, 98 snd will work on all 98 2nd- EXCEPT upgrades, as for the cd you "found" its worthless, its the license that you pay for.
