64 3400+ Temp

Hi, I have an AMD 64 3400 and it runs at or around 65C most of the time. I have the Thermaltake Venus whatever the hell its called copper heatsync and fan installed with Arctic Silver 5 and it still runs this hot. Should I try taking the heatsync off, reapplying goop and then reinstalling?

Its worth a try. That is a little warm. Which Venus heatsink do you have, there are several models?

Make sure you clean off the heatsink, and CPU really good and give it another try. Good Luck.

did you make sure to put the back plate on? It's a common mistake.

Definently reinstall heasink, Athlon64 shouldn't go above 60C during full load, unless your room temp's 50C.

Its the Venus 12 I believe. I found the problem though, for some reason the MSI board I am using had a temp sensor problem and when I updated the bios it dropped significantly. If anyone has the same MSI board as me make sure you do this bios update. Now my CPU idles at 45 without "cool and quiet" enabled, with it enabled it idles at 37. I thought this was impressive due to the fact that the case temperature is 35.

Just FYI Scott, AMD 64 processors have an aluminum plate on the back of the motherboard where the heatsync bracket is to help with the cooling. My motherboard came with one installed on it.

The Thermaltake Venus 12 simply use the stock clip mechanism, it doesn't come with any backplates, it just use the stock one which came with your motherboard.

I have a similar setup as you, but mine runs never above 50 degrees C. Using stock A64 box cpu cooling with backplate on. (changed my motherboard today from 2 fried NEO FIS2Rs. due to bad ps/2 ports.)

teh A64 requires a back plate. My Zalman CNPS7000A cooler said so in the manual which was included with the package. the P4 bracket doesn't need a back plate.

I bought a Spire Kestrell III CPU cooler as it was recommended by AMD for it's 64-FX line. The Cooler came with an unmounted metal backplate and a plastic mounting sleeve already attached to it. I took the sleeve off and the cooler fit right onto the stock sleeve already on my ASUS A8V deluxe mobo. So I went with it just like that. My temps are 29-32* at idle and 52* under full load with AMD's CoolnQuiet engaged. So I think my CPU cooler's doing it's job with those temps.

I recently became concerned because I never knew I had to put a metal backplate between the mobo and the tray. I don't know if this backplate is for cooling or additional support. But since the coolers working great and the coolers not loose or falling off the Mobo... I can only assume the cooler's being held securely. I don't know if the Mobo already has a metal backing plate install nor can I find out from the website so I'm going on trust.

The backplate is there b/c newer heatsinks are so heavy they can warp the mobo over time. I'd imagine this is just an extra precaution, b/c if you mount your motherboard correctly, it would have to warp an insane amount to short against the case.

Cut the kid some slack. Its all he knows. He's got a P4E and a Zalman cooler, therefore, P4E's are the best thing since sliced bread, as are zalman coolers obviously. Is that so hard to understand ? Its like ones first moped or something, if it just happens to be a Honda (or Suzuki) just because your uncle gave you one, Honda's (or Suzuki's) rule the world, and those Yamaha's are overpriced underperforming crap bikes for loosers that don't know a carburator from a ahem.. what is it called, that other thingy on the engine somewhere.. oh never mind that, but Honda's have GRTP-3 carbs, twin spark upside down liquid cooling automatic variable transmission drum gears and the engines rev *much* higher. I should know, I have one (or a Suzuki)

I don't know about your mobo, but my K8N neo had a backplate already installed. I just attached the stock HSF that came with my A64 to the retention mechanism and it worked great. If you were able to mount the fan directly to your retention mechanism, you'll probably be fine.
