Hi,

I've got a USD1500 budget and I need to hook up 101 PCs exactly for a LAN event and I figure you guys should know best.

I have been looking around and I *think* I have a few options.

5 x Hubs + 1 x 8port Switch
or
5 x Hubs (uplink/stack)
or
5 x Swiches (uplink/stack)

This will be a week-long event and the PCs are occupied up to 20 hours a day for LAN Gaming purposes.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

What kind of IP addressing are you going to do? If you are going to assign static IPs then it will not matter which way you want to go. If you will be setting up servers to hand them out then you will do better with switches.

I was basically stating that if they were going low-tech and using static IPs then why waste the money on switches.

it doesnt matter what kind of ip configuration you use whether its switches or hubs. it doesnt make any difference. if your talking about broadcast stuff, there is already so many things working in windows that use broadcasting dhcp wont make a difference.

a dhcp storm is not very significant on a network of 101 hosts. The right answer is nearly always to go for switches anyway.
