CPU: Intel Pentium 4 2.8C
Mobo: MSI Neo2 PFISR 865PE

What's a NORMAL operating temperature for this CPU? I'm still on the stock heatsink and fan and plan on upgrading it of course. Currently it's reading 49C (120F). Is that too hot? Any suggestions are comments are appreciated. Thanks.

49C idle or full load? Idle would be a little hot, provide a bit more info, case temp, room temp, what case, how many case fans etc...

Don't listen to anything Kanavit says, because he's a limped dick Intel loving pussy.

that temperature is at idle.
Case Temp: 39C (102F)
Case: Antec SX835II (2 fans in the rear)
Room Temp: N/A (maybe around 75F?)

I've hooked up 3 Thermaltake fans in the front and that lowered the case temperatures by almost 25F, but CPU temp didn't drop much (1F). Will an aftermarket CPU heatsink and fan cool things down significantly?

How are you looking at the temperatures? The BIOS feature can be innacurate in some cases.

My motherboard comes with this little program called "Core Center". Windows based program that monitors the CPU temperatures and fan rpms. How accurate is it? I don't know. But i touched the heatsink on the CPU and it didn't seem all that hot.

That's ridiculous for a 2.8C. You're 8C hotter than me at idle. Dump Core Center and download Speed Fan. Something ain't right here. Is this the stock heatsink fan with the thermal pad in the center?

where do i download speed fan? yes i'm using OEM heatsink and fan with the thermal pad in the center. i was able to overclock it to over 3GHz without any temp change though.

"Samsung 120gb ATA-100"

A bit off topic here, but how do you like your samsung drive?

Is it fast, quiet,....

thanks

They do fine. I've used SATA's and the ATA's in several builds and everyone likes them. You cannot hear them run, which makes it imperative that you have a MB with working activity LED's. Hear that, MSI?

i'm running a hitachi deskstar SATA drive, i'm either deaf or it's the quietest hard drive out there. i still don't know what my hard drive sounds like :) .

anyway i got motherboard monitor installed and it's reading like 80F idle. pretty good? the weird thing is, i'm getting SEVERAL different temperature readings from different programs. speed fan is very close to what motherboard monitor is reading. my "corecenter" from MSI always reads a bit higher than mobo monitor and speed fan. so i'm a little confused as to which is more accurate. i found out that updating my BIOS dropped my temps a little. lowest i've hit at idle was about 77F. a little feedback please.
