Hi

Curious about why a athalon 1700 with 512 ram would run faster then a pentium 4 2.8 (800 bus) with 512 hyper x dual channel on a gigabyte board with a 875 chipset?

Also ran a cpu speed test using ultimate boot cd 2.4
The Athalon came in at 2000 and the Pentium at 1200

The pentium 4 bios is showing the correct cpu, ram, bus ect.
Anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

Thanks

Well I am an AMD fan but I am pretty sure that those results are incorrect. Can you give more detailed specs of the machines, and what did you use anything else to benchmark them?

With an improperly tweeked or tuned system anything is possible.

What services or tasks are running in the background.

For example when I install MS Office 2000 pro my benchmark scores DROP 10%.

I aint signing nothing!!!

Um, now you have me worried, do you not disable that Office thing that runs at start up (File optimizer, or some such nonsense)? Maybe I should uninstall Office, maybe I can finally break 60k in AquaMark, lol.

The machine is a p4 2.8 (800 bus) with hyper threading, 512mg kingston hyper x dual channel ram, gigabyte Ga-8knxp board, Plextor 12x dvd burner, ATA 133 hard drive.

the test I am running is through dos. After you download this program you burn it as an ISO image file to a cd and boot with it http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4019.html

The only other test I have done is burning a dvd and the athalon is still faster then the 2.8

Well, there is certainly something very wrong going on here, there is no way that AMD system could beat a 2.8GHz C, not even the best Athlon XP's can do it. How are the systems setup? Tell us the full specifications of both systems.

Ah, but I guess the "problem" then is that you are using a too recent OS (probably Dos 6.1 or something). You should try running a benchmark under CP/M or OS/2 1.0 to get even more meaningfull benchmark results :) Also, burning a DVD isn't quite as good a test as measuring playback performance. Put in a DVD, and use a stopwatch to see how long it takes to play Lord Of the Rings. I'm betting the P4 will do better here..
