I've only got enough money for one or the other so which should it be? Right now i have a Athlon XP 2100 and a GeForceFX 5900.

You have a pretty good video card as it is, first off I would get the A64 FX-53, if I were you.

Intel P4 2.4B, MSI 645E Max-U Mobo, 1GB DDR333, ATI R9800PRO 128MB, TT PurePower 420W, SB Live 5.1, Samsung 120GB, Maxtor 120GB, LG DVD+-R/RW, WIN2K PRO SP4

if it were me i would do A64-3500+, Asus mobo with Nforce3 250GB chipset, and 1GB of DDR4000. The core you have now is so old and outdated you will notice a huge increase in performance.

you can get all that for the prize of an FX-53?!

Athlon 64 FX will make ten times more difference with FX5900 than a 6800 Ultra with Athlon XP.

Get a a64 3200/3400 AND the 6800GT...
That would be the best upgrade...

Athlon 2700xp+ (oc: 3200xp+ with 200fsb)
Radeon 9800pro (oc: 410/360)

Look starting price of fx-53 with just 512 meg memory on av8 mother board is like $1138 if you get 3500 with av8 deluxe 1 gig cosair dual channel 3500 and leadtek 6800gt for same price and it will out perform your fx5900 with fx-53.
Look around a little you will see.

I went from
xp2600
fx 5900
512 meg 3500 dual channel corsair
Gigabyte 7nnxp

64 3500
Bfg 6800 ultra OC
1 gig corsair 3500 dual channel
asus av8

BAM WHAT A DIFFERENCE MAN

I think the others have a better point, why go with the FX53 chip? If your budget was unlimited, yes the FX53 chip would be a perfect choice. However you budget obvisuly isn't unlimited, so it really would be better to go with a 64-bit, 3500+ or a 3400+. Going with one of these chips you would still be able to get a 6800 GT, which would still be an incredible setup.

Just my two cents, but taking this route seems much more sensible.

By the way. I already have an MSI K8N Neo2. No matter what im upgrading the CPU. I just wasn't sure if i should sacrifice CPU power for a new video card.

3500 with 6800 gt still better choice one or the other your limited by either old video technology or cpu technology
go with both on top you get best of both worlds.

Upgrade both your CPU and Videocard. Get a 6800GT and the best AMD 64 CPU setup you can afford.

Since you already have the mobo, I guess you upgrade often. May as well use the board now, and get the graphics card when you can. A week or two should be ok.

Get A64 3400+ (2.4 GHz, 512k L2 cache) with GeForce 6800GT

For those of you who missed the info, he already has an nforce3 250 ultra (socket 939) mobo. Buying a socket 754 board makes no sense.

It still seems more resonable to get the 3500+ (939 socket), which is almost half the price of the FX, and still have money for a video card.

If you do get the FX chip, how far off is a video card upgrade?

I missed the 939 part also, oops.
