Well....
First off, if you don't want to build your own....well, at least consider building your own.
Second, check out resellerratings.com no matter what you do. The <A HREF="

Third, search for threads on this board. You'll find that people had problems with Alienware, VoodooPC is too expensive, Dell is decent if don't opt for their budget PC's, Falcon is favorable, and Compaq is the plague unless you buy their servers. There's not much word about Gateway on here. E-machines, I don't know much, but I think your warrenty is void if you open the case (that's not good for upgradeability).
Be wary of proprietary parts. Vendors that use proprietary parts will limit your upgradeablility. I know that Dell and Compaq, at the very least used proprietary parts. Not sure if they still do.
If you can build your own, have the time to learn, or know somebody (family or friend) who can, I would go that route. If you want an amazing PC, the sure fire way to do it is to pick every part yourself.
