This is kind of a neat overview complete with pics of the dual core opterons AMD recently demo'd.

Be sure to see Page 2 of that, they expose the die size of current 130nm opterons and compare it to both single and dual core 90nm opterons. They also claim that a dual core 90nm opteron won't run substantially hotter than current 130nm opterons. Hope you chip junkies like this. I'm drooling to be perfectly honest.

Dual core is good and great, but when first unleashed, will not be any substantial speed boost. At least not the way the average joe will think of it - "hey, twice the performance, two processing cores!" - that will be marketing speaking.

I'm not saying that multi-core isn't the way to go, I'm saying noone (only maybe software renderers or heavy encoding software) will be able to reap any benefits from this instantaneously...

Um, right. I haven't been a regular here for almost a year, so I'm going to have to ask... Are you some kind of Intel Fanboy(TM)?

If Intel can pull off 65nm(prescott) before summer of next year, I would welcome that entirely. But I haven't seen any kind of logical reason to believe such things, which makes me think your statement comes from team loyalty/religious faith as opposed to evidence. Show me the evidence, I want to believe.

I must agree and take issue with what you said. Yes, many average joes will not understand the performance benefits. That's what they get for being average. :p

But there are more applications than the ones you listed that will benefit. If you develop software, you will benefit with faster compile times. If your workload entails heavy multitasking and alot of app switching you will benefit.

All the gamers will whine about it I'm sure.

Dont forget that when dual core cpu get release , games developer will be free to include support for them...i think that HL2 has support for dual cpu.

Winamp? You wouldn't possibly leave winamp active while playing Doom 3, would you?

Also, none of these consume more than a few percentage points of your CPU. Therefore, in this typical scenario, your second CPU core would feel about these same percentage points faster.

This is nowhere near a performance doubling!...

And also bear in mind that even AMD has a shared memory controller in this front, like Intel. So their memory access is shared as well!...

Kanavit has been the most ardent Intel fanboy here abouts. That will change, as he gets used to his new A64 system.
Once he realizes that the Intel benches didn't give him real life perf in game, but the Amd chip does, his tune will really change.

Don't forget though, the hickup factor in task switching. Dual pocessor definetly impacts that for the better.

But you are right, you are not going to pop one of these in, open up the typical game, and go "wow, it's twice as fast". No way, not even close. How much of a benefit this is really determines what you use your system for. For me, my compile times for projects are substantially reduced with dual processors. And lately, my projects have been really large. Not to mention the mulitple apps I have open throughout the day.

And in answer to your later question, yes, my system spec is accurate. But this is a workhorse machine, not a gaming rig.

WOW that's one hell of a rig. That had to cost a truck load. The ram by it's self was probably almost as much as my rig.

My system cost alot, yep, but I shopped the components and built it myself which saved some money, and my business paid for it, which offset some of the costs in terms of deductions.
I would never have bought this system if I didn't have a business reason for it. I would likely have gotten something like your system, save for an extra 512 of Ram and an Nvidia card(only because of linux). Good call on the Raptor. Damn I love 10k drives.
