NASCAR - PLD Inc rips off 1991 Gottlieb game layout?

As I was playing NASCAR this weekend, I kept having this recurring
thought that the play seemed familiar. Obviously nothing else has that
track, but the shot map didn't feel unique.
I kept winning replays on it, not getting stellar scores, but doing
very well and that surprised me on such a new machine I was
inexperienced with.
Sunday, I take my wife to go play it, and within 5 minutes, she goes,
"this playfield is a copy of Class of 1812" which happens to be her
favorite game and just freshly arrived in our home.
She was similarly destroying NASCAR on the replay front as well.
Take a look at the flyers, there is a *lot* of similarity in the shot
maps.
1812:

NASCAR:
http://www.ipdb.org/showpic.pl?id=5093&depth=-1&picno=2...
I got to thinking about it, and about a year ago I had a conversation
(via IRC) with Louis Koziarz that got a little heated. I pointed out
that I thought Monopoly was almost a drop dead clone of TAF, and he
didn't agree.
After we discussed the similarities in the shot map, he says something
along the lines of "there's only so many layouts you can do with the
current speed of pinball". I pointed out that Gottlieb had managed to
do creative layouts in the 90s with very similar ball speeds.
And yesterday, I realized I was playing a PF that was, at the very
least, heavily "inspired" by one Gottlieb did 14 years ago.

So, would you say that 1812 is a 'poor mans' Nascar? ;-)

No, I would say that NASCAR is rich man's 1812.

And here's photographic evidence along with a breakdown of the 7 shots
that are identical.

Dude, a fan is a fan. They don't look that similar to me. I certainly
don't see the "rip off". There must be a hundred games that you could
say this about. Give it up.
Similar? Maybe.
Rip off? No.
By the way 1812 is a cool game.

I see plenty of differences.
If you think that is close, go back to the old bally machines of the
seventies.
Three A, B, C lanes up top, followed below by three jet bumpers in a
triangle. Spinners on both sides and some targets on the sides (drop
and stand up). No speech and one ball players.
Now that was similiar!!!
And I loved em all back then.

You described a hell of a lot of GTB 70's multiplayers too.
....and I love those games.

You could also going by this mark say "Pat's TAF ripped the hand of
1812 also?".
I'd bet they play very different and I'll find out soon when Grand Prix
hits England.

Actually, they don't play all that differently. That's what initially
tipped us off.

I agree, they don't look that similar. I don't see the shots as being
identical. At best, the somewhat similar resemblance is coincidental.
A saucer behaves quite a bit differently than a target amongst other
differences.

A System3 saucer doesn't behave much differently than a scoop, though.
There's plenty of obvious differences, but the shot map and how you
interact with those shots is virtually identical.
It's not a knock on NASCAR, the game isn't that bad, but it's amusing
how similarily these games play.

I know what your saying
but theirs only so many ways to string cat
with only about 20" by 40" (approx.) of wood; we're bound to see
duplication in ramp and shot layout (IMHO).

Yep, *14* years to be exact!
I'm content with my version that cost 1/5 of a NIB NASCAR, and I'm glad
that you're happy with yours!

"Shame" isn't a knock? Whatever. It's an open (fan) layout. MANY games
will mirror this one.
PS: I agree that PLD has rehashed the whirlwind playfield enough times.
