I am having trouble cleaning off the cpu.
I used 91% isopropyl alcohol. It got all of it off but I still see the old stain of the thermal compound stuff on my p4 chip. How can I clean off this crap.

The stain is about the size of a half dollar. (in other words, the whole chip has this stain, except for all 4 corners.

If it is just a stain (discoloration of the heat spreader) and there is no TIM remaining, you have done all you can. Try to reinstall, with some AS, and check your temps.

try nail varnish remover...that's pretty tough on stains. Or a scraper of some sorts, or lapp with fine frade wet 'n' dry, use dry....

Ok i applied as5 onto the chip and i just put on the zalman 7000 HSF. But when i checked the temp there was no difference of temp. it is still idle at 50-55. It didnt do anything.

Forget the sandpaper. You could damage your cpu identification numbers, and void your warranty. Try the nail polish remover, and if it doesn't work, just reinstall with your favorite thermal paste.

Of course it didn't. Artic Silver has only a slight advantage over the stock thermal compound.

Plus the fact that it takes AS-5 a good week to set-up. You won't see your lowest temps till then.

Well thats in the micro-groves of the chip, would have to risk lapping it. Really not worth it. Usually one's "best effort" is good enough.

One might not even see the temp difference after a week, depending on how sensitive their temp monitor is.
