hi all
Iv just completed building my first pc and it booted up first time.
here is the spec

AMD mobile 2500
Abit NF7-S
512 pc3200
120 wD HDD
ATI 9800pro
Chieftec dragon
Antec trueblue 480
4 silenx fans

windows Xp went on fine and everything seems to be working fine however when I first start the pc where it sayes
the cpu type, it says cpu unknown and 1,000 mhz.
and then it does the memory test that takes ages so i just press esc.
Im not worried about the speed of the cpu as im going to oc it but im a little concerned that it doesnt recognise the cpu
it also says the memory is at 333 but iv tryed changing this in the bios but I cant find it.

please could someone help
thankyou Gwyn

Since you are using a mobile chip it will always come up with "unknown cpu", this is normal. The speed can be corrected by changing your FSB and muliplier. As for the settings, if you can't find the advanced settings in BIOS (Memory timings, and CPU controls), many boards hide them, once in the BIOS, try hitting Ctrl-F1, this will make the advanced settings appear on many boards. The key combination may be a little different on your Abit board, but generally they is always a way to adjust the memory speed.

When you change the muiltiplier in bios, first try 11 and 200fsb. Then check your temps. You could probably get it to 2.4 on air.

Watch out for the bloody Fanboys!

I'd guess 2400mhz at the least. Up to 2600mhz or more depending on your cooling and luck with the silicon

Maxtor 60GB ATA 133 7200RPM

iv got a vantec aeroflow2 hsf
and in my chieftec iv got 2 80mm silenx intakes
2 80mm silenx exaust fans and an 80mm chieftec side mounted intake fan.
do you think it will be ok to wack the settings up to 200/11 straight away or should i do it in stages?

ok iv changed the settings to 200/11 and its running at 2.21
everything seems ok. what should i increase next fsb or multipier?
the cpu is running at 34c
and inside the case is 22c
but iv not stressed much of it yet only the cpu test in sis sandra

Splendid
Try upping the fsb now. That way you can find out what your ram can handle. Go slow, maybe 2 mhz at a time.
You might also want to familiarize yourself with voltage adjustments, as upping the cpu and dimm voltages will be needed. If you haven't done so already, up your cpu voltage to 1.65, and bump the memory volage a notch as well.
Once you have found how high the fsb will go, start back at 200, but up the mutiplier, and raise the fsb again. Good luck, and have fun.

iv run some benchmarks with no problem but when I try and play doom3 it either freezes after about 2mins or stops and goes back to windows. my system is at 22c and CPU at 35c so its not overheating
what could the problem be?
im running the BIOS that came with it could that be the problem?

Sveral people have had some issues trying to run Doom3 while overclocked. Does Doom run normally when you CPU and GPU are at stock settings?
