I need just a general VGA switch for the classroom. So I can switch from my laptop to a digital camera, both going to the same projector. Will a KVM act as a switch, or does it have to have the keyboard and mouse connected? I was looking at the Trendnet ones, but didn't know if they would work without the keyboard\mouse.

A KVM gets it's power from the keyboard/mouse connection, so you do need to have a keyboard connected to it. This may work http://www.amazon.com/Super-Multi-Function-switch-Sharing-button/dp/B003PP0M46/ref=dp_return_1?ie=UTF8&n=172282&s=electronics, although the description is not the best for that product, it does sound like it can be used just to split video.

This is what you really need, but those devices are a lot more than just a KVM, but also have higher quality http://www.techorium.com/4-port-vga-switch-p-1122.html?zenid=5d3962670d558b8f7a532d317743fc40

I'm sure you can find less pricy models around also.
