Tried to restart Windows and got Black Screen with cursor.

Alright, so I'm sitting here at my laptop and my desktop computer is next to me. When I booted up my desktop this morning I could not open any programs, search for files, or open any folders. This is the very first time that this has happened to me. I thought that maybe it was a bad boot, like it is most of time so I restarted my computer. Now my desktop screen is showing a totally black screen with only a cursor. I fear that this might mean that my hard drive is starting to fail. What should I do to get off this black screen?

EDIT: The screen turned off as in the computer is no longer feeding it any video. This is usually the part before the computer boots back up but it has been at this screen for a good 4 minutes now. It usually takes 5 seconds.

  1. Could be the HDD, but sounds more like the PSU. Do you get any beep codes when booting?

I think it was just the HDD crapping out on me. I did a manual shutdown and then booted back up and it seems to be working fine now. But I think this may be a sign that my HDD is going to be broken soon.
