Good scanners for playfield art

I'm looking for a good handheld scanner I can use to scan various
areas of playfield and cabinet art. A flatbed scanner is large and
difficult to get in many areas, especially if a playfield is partially
populated. Do any of you have a scanner you find particularly well
suited to this purpose?

You're never going to get a good scan off a handheld scanner, because
it'll be moving during scanning. Unless some great changes in software
have happened in the last 6 years, I wouldn't expect great results.

But, hey, I could be wrong about modern hand scanners - but I doubt it.

There *was* a scanner that I used to have from Logitech, which was kindof
Barrell shaped that you could remove the scanner part which had a roller on
it, and it would scan as you are looking for. The motor of the scanner was
in this part, so it would roll along any surface and do the scan. Not sure
if it's available anymore.

Of course there is Shaggy's recommended HP ScanJet 4600. I just googled
these and staples has them for $24.99 ($32.94 delivered!) - it says one
day special.... they have been about $39. The unique design of this
scanner lets you lay it right on the surface to be scanned. They have
gotten pretty lousy reviews as people's only scanner, but for
playfields and this price how could you go wrong? HP has come out with
a successor, the ScanJet 4670 which is better rated, but likewise much
more expensive.

Just the messinger...

Has anyone used a hand scnaner for a small area scan for the purpose of
creating a decal to repair wear?

I used one of those logitec scanners (borrowed from a friend)it worked
well, but never could get the colors right.

Look for a STORM scanner. They maks a small picture scanner that comes off
of the base and will scoot along the PF under it's own power. Real neet.

Only works under win 95/98 though, but PC's are cheap.....

E-bay usually under 20 bucks. OR get one of those full page HP scanners
that are clear. Set it on the PF and zap you got it.

I did a CV cabinet front in less than 20 minutes. Colors were awesome and
it stitches multiple pages together easily.

Yep. I've got five or six in the discard pile...

I was researching these and they got slammed on epinions.com for
having really awful software. Is it really that bad?
