Hi everyone. I know on the desktop I prefer AMD over Intel. However I am going to be building a new box for a server, which will mainly be doing streaming media, audio encoding, etc. My options are

Dual Xeon 2.4 GHz with Hyperthreading
Dual Opteron 240

Just wondering if anyone has any opinions/experiences with either?

Thanks

Probably the Xeon box would be faster since it's media encoding. But, check carefully for prices. You might find a good deal on high-end Opteron box that would beat a low-end Xeon box for the same price.

And don't forget that Opteron are 64bit ready and the box will be upgradable to dual-core CPU when they will be out next year. AMD dual-core CPU will be 100% compatible with actual Socket940 MB (only BIOS update will be needed).

It depends more on the prog, when doing audio encoding, but most run better on Amd. If you get the opteron, and later switch to 64 bit progs, you will look like a flaming brain.
