Hello and welcome to Tom's Hardware Forums.

It's worth persisting with this job yourself because the outfits who dismantle and read from the platters charge a small fortune. Start by removing the disk itself from the outer casing and detach the connecting plug from that casing so it stays with the disk.

Plug that into the USB Port and try different orientations - sideways, upside down, etc. then gently tap the circular marking that denotes the centre of the platter inside the case. I use the rubber handle of a screwdriver because hardly any pressure is needed if it's going to dislodge the platter if it's become off-centre.

Also, don't give up too easily. I've plugged a "dead" into a PC probably a hundred times before it suddenly whirred into life and showed up, albeit slowly, as a valid drive when I was able to recover all the personal files my customer needed.

When you take it from its outer casing, feel the centre of that circle with a fingertip - any sign of vibration or movement is an encouraging one.
