Hi,
I keep getting broadband update alerts (very annoying)
but don't think they apply to me and am wondering if I
should obey or continue to ignore them...
You see our broadband connection is connected to an MN-
700 router and then by ethernet to a comp running Win ME.
My computer (running XP) is then wirelessly connected to
the router/network via a MN-730 card.
While it's confusing, that set up was working fine until
a few weeks ago when I started getting prompts to update
my broadband program. However since my comp isn't
connected directly to the router (i.e. via ethernet
cable), it seemed to me that the instructions & the
update didn't actually apply to me. I've also just
downloaded XP's SP2 and so have started getting
additional reminders to update the broadband b/c of that.
But the primary computer, the one attached to the router,
isn't running XP and so isn't getting the prompts to
update. As a result (or perhaps regardless), I'm still
getting an endless stream of annoying reminders about
this.
Should I simply install the program even though my comp
is connected wirelessly? Will that mess up the network or
my computer? Would it stop these reminders? Should I
install it after (temporarily) connecting to the router
via ethernet? Wouldn't there be trouble once I returned
to being wireless? Should I even try to install the
update on the ME computer just in case? Would that affect
the alerts on this comp at all??
Other than switching the ME comp over to XP, is there
anything I can do to stop these alerts? I don't actually
care about the update itself so long as not installing it
doesn't cause problems with my connection in the long
run....
I hope someone out there can help b/c this is driving me
up the wall!

You only need the BNU on computers that are connecting wirelessly using
an OS that doesn't fully support wireless networking. Since Windows XP
has full wireless support you don't need the BNU on Windows XP
computers. Also since the BNU is only needed on wireless computers you
can also remove it from the wired computers.
You might want to browse to http://192.168.2.1 to check the firmware
version. The current version is 2.01.02.0590. If you don't have that
version then go to the following link then download & install the
"MSBNDownload.exe (13MB)" file as it will install the firmware update
for you.
