Help with Memeory ram

So my computer marginally has 16 gig memory ram but now it suddenly say its only has 8gig memory ram installed what does that mean?? Did something burn out or break?? I recently updated my computer to window 8 and is still learning how to use it...also my window 8 isn't activated yet either. so why is my computer saying it only has 8 gig of memory ram now?? Any ideas??
