A wireless mouse will work fine. It uses a wireless receiver that plugs into the usb port

Also check for a touch pad on/off switch. It's on a lot of laptops. (why i don't know) Give us the make / model and we may be able to help more.

Do you have a wired mouse plugged in? If so, your touchpad may have been disabled when you connected the wired mouse.
