Expensive system, what kinda comments you looking for? Your OOL is sweet though! 10Mbps down and 1Mbps up, gotta luv it.

OOL?

As you may be able to see, I'm not exactly a hardware-savvy person.

I was just wondering whether there are any ways I can improve that system, or if there is any part on there that is not worth its price on a performance : price ratio.

If you're looking to imropve price:performance ratio without noticable loss of performance, then I recommend getting GeForce 6800GT instead of GeForce 6800 Ultra. And 2 x 512 MB RAM will be fine for now and next 1 year

Someone mentions that the 74GB Raptor might be unnecessary.

Anyone else think so? I thought that it would be a good choice for my C: drive because of its speed.

I went ahead and made the changes regarding the RAM and the Video Card.

What do you think about the new Vid Card: EVGA nVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT Video Card W/Doom3 "256-A8-N349-AX" ?

Too many HDDs IMHO, get two 36GB Raptors in RAID-0 instead of the 76GB and a 120GB for storage, there are no reasons to get a 250GB and a 200GB, that is way too much storage.

You could get a 3000+ 90nm A64 for Socket 939, it will cost you a lot less and you'll be able to get some amazing overclocking from that beast.

A64s with their Dual-Channel On-Die Memory Controller are much less dependant on memory latency than systems based on a off die Memory Controller, considering the four memory modules, you could shave off a good amount of money by getting CAS 2.5 memory instead (most of them will run flawlessly @ CAS 2 anyway with a slight voltage bump ).

You should go for a CRT monitor instead of that LCD, they cost a lot less, are not prone to dead pixels and give a superior image quality.

That's just my two cents, against your 3k $ machine =)

Computer List". You have Optimum Online Cable internet(OOL) right?


Anyway, your specs are top notch. Very expensive, but very fast. I'd save money on a 6800GT and A64 3500+ or an overclocked 3000+. personally I'd rather have 1 quieter raptor 74GB than two louder 36GB's in raid, so I like your HDD choices. 1GB ram is enough IMO considering ram prices. And the mobo is right on for S939 now. Maybe in a few months you'd choose differently.

Nice system though. Wasn't sure at first if you owned it already or not.

EDIT: Didn't see the third HDD. Overkill to me but for maybe quite useful for you. Question though? Don't see optical drives mentioned? I hope a nice DVD burner and a second DVD/CDRW combo are part of the plan. A system that good could use 2 optical drives. Lite-on's are my choice. Anyway, reason i ask, is I like the two opticals to be alone on there own ide controller/cable and not slaved. So I'd do all the HDD's in SATA not IDE so the two optical drives could be alone not slaved, and the HDD's don't have to have an optical on the same cable either.

74GB/120GB on a $3000+ system when HDD's are so cheap now?

74GB/160GB+ would be the minimum I'd say and the extra 40GB hardly costs anything these days. It's not hard to fill a 120GB drive these days. Why not go 200GB or higher if priced right.

OK, while we dream of building/owning his system? What monitor would you buy. Personally for a killer gaming rig, I'd do a 21-22" CRT instead of an LCD. If your desk can fit it and you won't be taking it to LAN parties, the big CRT would be the gamers choice IMO. Just curious as to others opinions.

Yeah, I actually was thinking about switching it over to a CRT, which I did.

Also, I added : Lite-On 16X DVD-ROM, Model SOHD-167T Black,
and made note that I already own: NEC ND-2510A 8X Dual Layer DVD+/-RW Drive.

CPU - Price/Performance wise, aint worth it. Back it down to a 3000+ / 3200+ and overclock it.

Harddrives - You don't need that much space...surely?

PSU - You won't need 550Watts, I think you could get away with a brand name 450 / 500.

Yeah I think i'm going to drop to a 480 p/s.
I'm still wavering on the LCD/CRT issue because this will be used at a college where space is limited.
Plus, though I am quite the body builder, if I have to move this system around for whatever reason, I don't want to deal with a 20-30 lb CRT.

Also, I'm still wondering whether to go to a 5.1, the space issue comes back into play, so I think a decent speaker system, nothing necessarily top-of-the-line in that regard.

I like the <A HREF="http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/products/details/US/EN,CRID=2,CONTENTID=5047" target="_new">Logitech Z640's</A> for inexpensive 5.1 speakers with some punch to them. I have 2 sets of these, and for the price of under $60, doubt you'll find a better 5.1 set.


And 30LBS. too heavy for a CRT, LOL, better hit the Gym (just kidding). 19" CRT's are around 45 LBS., 21" more like 55LBS., the Nice Viewsonic 22" P220fb, is 67 LBS. But nothing sweeter for gaming. Anyway, LCD's sure look nice on your desktop, and I use a 19.1" Samsung 191T at work. But To me, considering price, a nice 19" CRT is a much better value & performer for a gamer.
