Does A64 Memory Speed matter?

So far I've managed to get my A64 to 2.4Ghz at 266x9, but teh problem is my crappy pc2700 memory refuse to boot with the an higher divider than 1:2, so Im stuck with 133Mhz memory speed. How muh does this affect the performance? I do intend to get some new memory soon but for the time being I can run it like this or at 2.34Ghz with 171Mhz Memory speed (2-2-2-10 timings). So which would give me the most performance?

The cpu score in 3d mark 03 is a good indicator. See which gives the better score. I'm betting the 171, but it may be no better than 166, even with the reduced total speed. Harmonics seem to do wierd things with DDR.

Well I'll have a look later on tonight, but Im hoping I should be able to get it a bit further tonight. I would only need to get the FSb to 333Mhz with this ratio for my RAM to be in sync, which would be 3Ghz :smile:

No, Im on air, and I dont really expect to get to 3Ghz. I suppose I could 8x333 which would be almost 2.7, and still hav the memory in sync.

heya tombance;

Considering the A64 native bus is 400Mhz you are really hurting performance by using pc2700, also with the A64 onboard memory controller you can really take advantage of faster memory timings, the faster your timings the better, so my advice is to go out, and spend the rediculous amount of $300 and get you some Crucial Ballistix PC4000, and OC that bitch to the moon. If you cant afford the performance memory atleast get some Crucial pc3200, it will make a big difference at just stock speeds.

Well I gave up at 2.4Ghz, since more than this requires a large voltage boost that in my eyes really isnt worth it. I now have it at 300x8 in order to give me some nice round numbers. The HTT is at 3x and the RAM is currently at exactly 150Mhz. I've decided that as soon as I can afford it I'll get some decent pc3200/3500 and change the divider to give me either 200 or 250Mhz RAM speed, whichever the RAM can handle.
