Hi everyone,

I just bought a new computer, and during the installation of Win2000, I have random blue screens. This either in the first step ("Text screen") or the second step after reboot ("Graphic screen")

I went back to the place I bought it, and after showing the problem to the different techs there, I was told that my computer was too new for Win2000, and that WinXP would work without any problem. I'm not sure about this, and I suspect the RAM to be faulty.

Here are a few specs:

CPU - P4 2.4Ghz
Board - Asus P4S8X (Same results with AGP at 8x and 4x)
Mem - Kingston DDR333 512mb
Vid - ATI Radeon 9700 Pro
HD - WD 80gig
Sound - SB Audigy

So, is it true that WinXP would work and not Win2000? Any other ideas?

Any comment is welcomed.

Thanks,

Danny Lacerte

Too new??? Maybe explain that there might not be supported drivers in Windows 2000, but not that.

If you suspect the memory to be screwed up, run Memtest. It's free. Have one memory stick installed at a time to make it easier to see which one's messed up (if you have more than one).

tell us the exact error message and then we can look it up.

and win2k is still offically supported for at least another 3 years!! (SP3) so don't let them shirk their responsibilities..you machine is under warranty its up to them to get it to work properly :)

Faulty RAM gets My vote.
Win2k drivers exist for all those components.
check if a BIOS update is available, do it if it does
if it's still not working try RAM diagnostic tools.

If the place you bought it off tell you that, they obviously don't know what they are talking about. Take it back and get a refund while under warranttee before something else goes wrong
